I was trying to figure out the writing on the first panel before I went to the next. Couldn’t do it. To me, this is the genius of Samson! Another great strip.
When I was a kid my father bought a Toshiba cassette player. For some reason, I still don’t understand why it had a function to record backward via a mic. So with some friends, we recorded our backward speaking and then listened to see if we could make it sound “natural.” We found that the task was impossible.
Both retrograde (as here) and inversion have been used to construct intricate musical puzzles in which one voice meshes with another playing the same thing— Bach being just one of the great minds to accomplish it well.

If you don’t have the right one on the right ear, even the left one won’t sound right.

You know what happens if you play country music backwards?
Your wife comes home, your truck starts running, and your dog comes back to life…
