    Quicksand gets the name from the old use of “quick” meaning “alive” or “as if alive”. We see the same usage in “the quick and the dead”, and the old chemical names “quicklime” and “quicksilver” (for liquid mercury). In this context, quick does not imply speed.

    Sometimes, truth in advertising can have a negative effect, which is why in the med commercials the ‘possible side effects’ field is in tiny print and lasts about as long as a puff of smoke. They don’t like to encourage one not to buy.
