One of my favorite song writers, Mason Williams, was a writer/performer on The SBCH. Here is one of his offbeat songs, performed as a skit by Tommy and Janet Leigh.
One by one, every actor / television host I knew as a child is leaving us. So many memories, so much light brought into the world without vulgarity. Every candle on the altar of my childhood memories are going out one by one.
More and more of the people who entertained us while we were growing up are passing away. I know their deaths are inevitable, but it still saddens me. RIP, Tommy.
Always enjoyed them. I watched the early show even if most went over my young head. Enjoyed them more when they brought the show back twenty years later. I then understood all the jokes.
Tommy is also immortalized in John Lennonâs âGive Peace a Chance.â He plays guitar and sings in the background, and heâs name-checked in the lyrics.
Tom Smothers was a very funny person and Dick was the perfect straightman for him. Loved when they were singing âJimmy Crack Cornâ refrain and instead of âMy masters gone awayâ Tom kept saying âJimmy Crack Cornâ. Dick had to gently remind Tom that thatâs not the way the song goes and Tom said, âI donât careâ. To a pre-teen it was hilarious â still is in my memory.
Gosh, I remember watching the original Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour as a kid and being so bummed they were canceled. I loved that show! Of course, at the tender age of ten, I had no idea why such a great program was canceled. It was only when I got older did I learn the real reason why. It was that show and Laugh-In that preceded my teen years, which led to my love affair with SNL.
Thanks to every one for reminding me of what a great comedian Tommy was and what a great show the SBCH was. Thanks especially for the simple, but effective and heartfelt, tribute.

Thank you for honoring him here, The Smotherâs brothers gave me hours of laughter, and the older I get the more precious I realize that gift is.

We bought a car from Dick about 25 years ago. (He had gone into auto racing and selling after he retired from show biz).

When Folk Music was actually comparatively radical, for the times. They appeared so harmless. Societal commentary⌠in sheepâs clothing.

Oldsmobile had the Smothers Brothers racing team that ran 442s on drag strips back in the day.

I hope I remembered to digitize my old Smothers Brothers vinyl before I gave them all away. Youâll be missed Tommy.

Miss him, they were great. I think it was The Big Muddy that the network fell out on.

My grandmother lived with us when I was little. I remember we always watched together Red Skelton and the Smothers Brothers. They were brilliant.

I never was able to see nearly as much of the GebrĂźder Smothers as I would have liked, not in those days actually owning a TV.
