Typical Earthling behavior: shoot first, ask questions later. Maybe the space squid wasn’t attacking. Maybe it only wanted to be hugged.

I’m surprised he felt that.

This reminds me of times when we, as kids, might toss something to someone and say “Think quick!” – knowing that they likely would not be ready to think (or react) quickly enough to be able to catch the thrown item. Or sometimes (probably even more often), we would fake throwing it at first, give them time to get set (after panicking a little bit), and then throw it nice and easy to them.
