I remember a quote from Chief Seattle, I believe: “The white man made many promises to us. As many as there are stars in the sky. He broke every single promise but one. He said he was going to take our land, and he took it.”
You know, if only we passed civil rights legislation, passed Constitutional Amendments, guaranteed the right to vote for women and minorities, maybe we wouldn’t be a racist country. Hey, wait a minute….
I fully expect that Mr. Two Bulls will understand better than most, but on behalf of all the other inhabitants born in the large and varied expanse of the Americas, I must restate here, as a comment to THIS particular comic, there “America” is not a country. America is a large continent, where “The United States of America” is but one of 35 countries.
And I thought lynchings and Sundown Towns were based on racism. What were lynchings and Sundown Towns based on, Nikki? Oh, and don’t forget what’s considered a “good Indian.”
Bigotry and racism are fear based. Fear of someone different. Fear that someone has more than they do. Fear that others are better than they are. It is real lack of self worth, self confidence that drives the jealousy made from fear of others. conservatives must always have someone to hate, someone to fear, someone to be jealous of.
I recall once at a Baltimore mall, I got out of my car and bumped the one next to me with my hip. The black lady came out of the car in a hurry yelping about it. I was trying to calm her down when this big black guy came up. “What’s going on here?” he asked. “This white boy hit our car!” “Sir, I said, I bumped the car with my hip. I didn’t mean to.” She kept screeching. He said. “Get in the car.” She shut up and did. He talked to me a minute, came over and looked at the car, shook hands and I went into the mall. But I’ve never forgotten her tone and the way she said “White boy.” I grew up on a street in a small VA town that was about half white and half black. He played together and ate at each other’s house. I was taught respect, not racism.
We do need to recognize that we have a tendency toward racism. We tend to collect with our own. “Birds of a feather flock together” was what my mother used to say. And it was true then and now. My dear Aunt Peggy was thought to be racist against blacks. But when she went to live with her sister in Texas, there were few black folks about. But, there were many latinos and so she hated them, too. So, in reality, she loved her own race at the exclusion of others.

Tragedy compounded by continuing racism over the centuries.

The problem with history is that you can’t “fix” it.
You can accept it and learn from it and do your best to be better.
Or you can hide it and try to cover it up. We need to protect history from the cowards trying to cover it up.

The Oklahoma state government is still a little P.O.’d the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Native Peoples making 1/3 of Oklahoma reservation lands.

As a test, try driving a hybrid car through the deep rural south with California plates. Sheriff Bubba will pull you over very quickly.

I recommend “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. (The current movie, “Origins”, is based on this book.
