Could be the Gasette is switching up their comics page. The largest four or five national chains have taken away most all the latitude local editors have to select the titles they think their readers would appreciate, in favor of a corporate-directed ‘one size fits all’ approach that likely saves money for buying in bulk.
It’s something of a disaster for many of the newer strips who didn’t make the corporate cut, while most of the legacy (zombie) strips will go on and on for awhile longer, until hedge fund ownership buries the institution altogether.
(Or maybe they just finally got the final, official results of the New Look vs Big Stare election, who knows?)

Speaking of the classics, for the 12th we have a full plate of post-football season updates.
Walt and Skeezix go on a fall commerce walk, Hipshot is doubted, Torgan thinks he has the world by the tail, now that he owns half of a leg-paint company… while Nina and Skeezix start to prepare for the big day. Or maybe they’re going to need a week or two to come to terms with the whole idea.
There’s no way on Earth the actual reveal with justify their reactions. Mark my words, it’ll be something inane. Nothing of any import ever happens in this comic. Remember when every character (even the animals) were panicking when nobody had heard from Walt, and when they broke into his house to check on him he was just napping in his chair? Remember when his whole life flashed before his eyes like it was finally the end for him, only for it to not be the end and he just went about his day? Remember how he keeps visiting the Old Comics Home like this will finally be the time he stays there permanently… only for it to not be the case?
I’m just saying, prepare for yet another tease that goes nowhere. Jim is just wheel-spinning at this point.
“Good (?) news, everybody: Slim didn’t freeze to death in his car, and it turns out that the supposed “love note” his wife found was from his granddaughter, so everything’s fine! Or … is it? The newspaper and TV are telling them something unbelievable. Probably something about how the martyred Abraham Lincoln’s memory is being used to promote a sale on sofa beds or Toyotas or something, as panel two hints.”

Since this involves both TV and Print media, I suspect that it refers to reports that many people doubt what they see/read in the news.
