A similar confusion surrounds goblins and hobgoblins. Goblins are usually portrayed as evil while hobgoblins are just mischievous as with Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream who is referred to as a hobgoblin by Titania.

That’s what happens when you read up on folklore intead of watching cartoons.
