The U.S. needs to upgrade numerous aspects in critical infrastructure to prevent future attack but I’m sure Repubs will continue to bemoan vulnerabilities while denying funds to help businesses harden their infrastructure.

And then there are the thousands of electrical generation & supply, refineries, pipelines, storage, chemical and manufacturing, etc…that need to be assessed and protected. Which requires investment.

If the government requires non revenue generating investment, the owners will scream foul, though I would think their investors or insurance companies would be pressing for improvement too.

Now if we shouldn’t fund Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education etc I’m totally and completely confident that our brethren on the fiscally conservative side would not want their federal tax dollars invested to protect critical infrastructure.

I certainly hope we have people over in Ukraine, observing and learning and bringing back lessons. But I suspect that even in the best case, there will be an incident that causes major damage and creates the incentive to get serious about cyber security.

PS – if I was starting a career, cyber security has great potential. Every organization which uses computers, chips, networks, SCADA, realtime control will need people to assess, improve and defend.

It seems like we should be investing in infrastructure, but that would require an act of Congress and we can see how that work.
