Mom was a farm girl and had home grown tomatoes outside the kitchen door. A suburban princess came over for dinner and wouldn’t eat tomatoes that had been growing in dirt.
Sadly enough many people in Nicaragua really do eat mud pies due to the lack of actual food. My sister was part of a ministry that linked up with Doctors without Borders to bring in food, attempt to establish sustaining food sources, and provide medical help. She did it twice and even got a day off to go to Costa Rica for a day of fun (Zip=ling) . It was a fun country to visit that is in the upper middle income living index. Unfortunately, my sister couldn’t return as her reward on the last trip was getting Hepatis C during a doctor’s visit while she was sick. She was given a shot, and the belief among the staff was it came from the needle (or syringe) that was used. Apparently it is not uncommon for needles to be reused there. It pretty much destroyed her health.

Alice doesn’t seem to mind that food comes from dirt.

That’s almost right, Alice. The food for our food comes from dirt.

Madeline should know by now that Alice will be telling Petey that food comes from dirt.

NOT dirt! It’s SOIL.

Wait until he finds out some food even grows under the dirt. He’ll never eat a potato again.

Yeah, considering his reaction to learning where eggs come from.

Is it ironic that dirt is often beige, Petey’s favorite color?

Indeed, please don’t. Petey’s scream would surely shatter my screen, and I can’t afford a new tablet this year.
