Walnut Ridge, Arkansas is celebrating their sesquicentennial with âthen and nowâ tours using View-Master reels made from historical photographs of local landmarks. As the president of the local historical society puts it, âThe idea was for people to look at our current buildings, and then the tour guide would say to raise the View-Master to their eyes and press the lever, and theyâd be seeing what was on that same spot a century or more ago.â (From The Wall Street Journal)
I had a Viewmaster once and it was neat, but before that I had something I liked much more. It was a small handheld projector type thing that took film cartridges, you could look into the eyepiece and turn a crank to watch entire cartoons (albeit without sound). Too bad they didnât combine the two concepts and make a 3D version, that would have been amazing.
Fun trivia, Viewmaster was originally marketed to adults for things like vacation and tourism photos (and other more mature categories). The first units were made of bakelite and were very high quality looking similar to camera equipment compared to the later plastic toys.

Unless itâs animated, that could be done with a completely mundane wheel.

I remember having a Viewmaster as a child. We nicknamed it âLennyâ after the Toy Story binoculars.

My dad still has an old school one from the 70s with tons of photo reels. I loved playing with it as a kid.

Iâm surprised Marigold would agree to dye her mane. That seems like agreeing that she can be improved.
