A solar eclipse is when the moon is between the Earth and the Sun. A lunar eclipse is when the earth is between the Moon and the Sun. What’s it called when the sun is between the moon and the earth?
Charlie ‘s Believe It Or Not: There is a constant solar eclipse occurring, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Somewhere in space our moon blocks visibility of the sun constantly. It’s just that it is happening in outer space, and not somewhere on Earth. That makes this wondrous stuff only visible in space. But when easily maneuverable space craft become available, expect someone to start selling rides to observe what will become the everyday miracle.
A pinhole camera (camera obscura) is easy to make… Take an old cardboard box and cut a window in one end. Tape aluminum foil over the window and poke a hole through it with a pin. The rounder the hole, the better it works. Aim the hole at the sun and watch the projected image of the sun inside the box. Use a piece of white paper in the box as a projection screen for better contrast.
Kind of difficult to see so many considering they only happen once on average every 12 years or so somewhere on earth. That would mean he has to be at least 324 years old. Plus the image shows him looking at it…WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION. The next one is predicted for 2044.
What I find amazing about solar eclipses is the ability of people (MUCH smarter than me) to accurately predict when they will occur. Years, decades, centuries in advance. I don’t get it.
In 1973, astronomers aboard a modified Concord experienced a total Solar eclipse for 74 minutes by having the Concord fly along the center of the path of totality.

Mayans believed a Jaguar was eating the sun. Paul D. Maley has traveled the world to see 80 solar eclipses.

Everybody should see a solar eclipse once in their lives. The sky goes dark, the stars come out, and animals act strangely
