There is nothing in the American constitution that prohibits criminals from holding public office, not even the presidency. The founding fathers had a lot of issues to consider. If someone had suggested that they discuss whether a convicted felon should be president, I would imagine that they would have told him they needed to stick to things that could realistically need to be addressed and that if the people were actually stupid enough for that to become an issue, they might as well forget this whole Democracy thing anyway.
