That’s true Arlo but a bookmark doesn’t get as lost as a book can.

Aw come on. Is it really that big a deal to wait until page 32 to find the exact match of what you typed into the search engine? /s

Use Gemini. It’s the world’s most widely read librarian. Conversations with it have eliminated 90% of my searches. It gives you specific information and allows follow up questions. (BTW, I don’t work for Google, never have, or even own their stock.)

My how-to books are so old they depict working with wired electric tools.

I might still have my old craftsmen home maintenance book. Was starting point for every home project. Then reading the directions on packaging. Youtube did not exist back then.

Unrelated (or related) ads – Ad blocker

Endless Pages of useless hits – Advanced Search (cuts ‘em down; doesn’t eliminate ’em)

    Paywalls – Can’t help you with that… ☺

Metric system has obsoleted most of my tools. Hammers and pliers are excepted though.

I volunteer at my library’s book store. We have a Home Improvement section that just gathers dust…old Sunset project books, the classic Reader Digest big blue book of home repairs….

I don’t have any problem finding what I need on the internet (including woodworking practices and tips). And I don’t mind an ad or two if they’re reasonably short. I appreciate the content the people are making and they have to eat. For that matter, so the folks that create all the infrastructure that brings you the content.

I can relate to Arlo’s comment in panel three. Ads on the internet are the number 1 distraction!!

What a pain. First you have to prove your not a robot then every 2-3 minutes you have to be interrupted by an add of no relation to anything. Try selling me an add free subscription then we will talk. It’s as bad as having to use a magnifying glass to see if there is part of a motorcycle in a square.

We’re in a brief halcyon moment when one can get good results from a chat AI such as Gemini or Claude or whatever without getting a deluge of ads. It won’t last long, so enjoy it while you can, and always doublecheck the answers you get, just as you do with your knowledgeable but imperfect human sources.

Fathers, be good to your daughters, and kit them out with a few decent, basic power tools when they’re fixin’ to leave the nest. Every woman should have her own repair kit with a jigsaw, a cordless drill (and bit set) with a keyless chuck, and a good hammer! My dad made sure I had all the basics (wired…this was 1976) when I got my first apartment, and they were a godsend! Over the years I have upgraded, but I still have my old standbys, and they all still work!

Speaking of ads on the internet- I had AdBlock+ for years but about 2 months ago I started noticing that I was getting more and more ads on websites than I usually did and then I started getting ads on a local area news website that I never had before and it was getting to be too much so I sent them an email complaining about it, well the next day I had double the ads on that site and others and I knew something had to be wrong so I did some digging and found reviews for AdBlock+ where users were saying the site did an update the previous week and since then ads were popping up everywhere and nothing could be done to get rid of them and nobody at AdBlock+ was responding to their complaints so I decided I would just look for a different ad blocker and not deal with them anymore, so I typed in “top 5 ad blockers available” and the list came up and the #1 site was uBlock Origin so I looked at reviews and they were so postive so I uninstalled AdBlock+ and download uBlock Origin and it works fantastic, no ads on any sites, even here I was getting ads on each side of the page and I am not anymore, so I am going to keep this one.

Has anyone else had this experience with AdBlcock+ and what did you do? Anyone ever hear of uBlock Origin?
