I’m kind of surprised that Mom didn’t give Heart the relevant mother-daughter talk before this. Or maybe not. One day your daughter is a sassy six year old and the next you know she’s a flirty fourteen. Time goes by so fast.
I (56M) was babysitting the grandchildren when the middle granddaughter started her first period, at 8. Had to pack up the whole crew and go out in search of appropriate supplies. Remember: MIDDLE gd. Couldn’t find “feminine hygiene”. Had to ask the clerk for help. Turned out well but it was 8 years ago and I am still processing. (-<)
Sounds like she didn’t get to sit through a special assembly like we did when I was in school in the 1970s, where the girls got a talk about the subject and a movie and a cute little booket.
I actually used a belt for the first few times because my mother still had the sorts of pads that had to be clipped to a belt, they weren’t adhesive. Fortunately I found out about Stayfree not long after!
I think this is a time when it’s okay to awaken a parent for this. Mom or dad. You’re old enough to raise a kid, you’re old enough to be mature about it. I do like the implication that her friend is yelling so loudly on the phone that mom might hear.
Heart and Kat’s friendship is really wonderful. Heart never wanted to talk about puberty and period with her mother or any grow up, but she’s okay with her best friend.
1959 Mom was home, the pads didn’t have adhesive. There was elastic “belts” with little fasteners to hold the long flappy ends of the pads. Mom brought the whole contraption to me in the bathroom, then I had to yell to her to come back and tell me how it all worked.

I don’t remember ever taking chewables as a kid. Come on, Heart, your body is growing up. You should try that, too. :P :P :P

Not to be rude in a crisis, Heart, but I don’t think your mom would be upset about being awakened. At least she has help and comfort from a friend.
