I use algebra quite often in my daily routines and hobbies. Calculus, on the other hand…

I have never, ever, used algebra, so what was the point of my memorizing a whole bunch of equations so I could pass the exam?

Don’t worry Dave, if you don’t graduate you can always try for a GED.

When professional mathematicians try to convey to the rest of us why they love it, how fascinating and fun it is for them, I don’t recall them ever using algebra to illustrate the point.

My brother was a math teacher – he said it is not so much the math itself, but the critical thinking you had to use to learn it. That stays with most people all their life.

Well, medicine uses more math than you would believe. It is rocket surgery and brain science after all.

Algebra is another one of those subjects you take not so much to get the job you want, but so that you don’t have to take a job you don’t want.

Nobody asks you to use algebra because they saw your high school math grades.

Algebra – no. Social Calculus – yes! And you won’t understand IT, either!!

The most fun I ever had at work was developing a spread sheet to calculate the fuel rail pressure of a car 24 hours after a hot engine shut-down. Real world, which means thermal expansion and contraction, the fuel is compressible, and the steel fuel rail can stretch.
