Well, if the aliens landed at the foot of Mount Rushmore they might think that. What if they landed in the Sahara dessert, or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Why is Brewster assuming they’ve landed on an inhabited site?
(Of course, Brewster isn’t playing with a full deck, and in the movies the humans always land in the worst possible spot on another planet.)
The problem is how to recognize really alien life. The most advanced and powerful civilization in the galaxy may be a layer of semiconductor material on an asteroid near a nondescript red dwarf star.
“Somewhere in the cosmos, he said, along with all the planets inhabited by humanoids, reptiloids, fishoids, walking treeoids and superintelligent shades of the color blue, there was also a planet entirely given over to biro life forms.”
This makes me think of the Star Trek episode The Savage Curtain where a conscious rock creature pits Kirk, Spock, Abraham Lincoln, and the Vulcan legend Surak against notorious villains from history to help the rock creature understand “good and evil”.

There’s life on Earth. Intelligent life? Not so much.

I recently read an article that suggests we’ve been looking for life on Mars the wrong way. It states that we need to follow the salts, not the water.

Those remind me of “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” I was a kid and they really scared me. (mission accomplished)

The aliens came to Earth and found life. They said they didn’t much care for tragedies, and then they left.
