I believe the “play” is extraneous.

I cannot stand arrogance, especially when (as it so often is) it’s undeserved, so Alice’s behavior gets under my skin. Good thing she’s a cartoon character, eh?

Given the adult language all the kids use I think we’re meant to infer that Alice used a stronger word than dang.
