There are many animate and inanimate things that look very different when illuminated by a black light. It’s like living in an entirely different world.
When I was a docent at the Bronx Zoo, they had a flying squirrel. I forget if it was in the nocturnal animal or small mammal house. At least they thought they did. After it was put in the enclosure, no-one ever saw it again. The food disappeared but it’s actual presence was just an assumption.
Thanks – I didn’t know that. I’ve never even seen a flying squirrel in nature. I know they live in this area, but I suspect they mostly stay up in the high canopy, well out of sight.
I once had a flying squirrel in my house. It was a surprise. Petey [RIP] was fascinated with my wool clogs at the front door. I looked to see what he was concerned about, and a small flying squirrel came out. I trapped him with a tea towel and released him out the back door. He flew out to the pine tree and disappeared.

with the longer nights I get to see our flying squirrels before bed and when I get up in the morning. They love the peanuts we put out.
