Reminds me of when I worked for Abbott. There were some employees who had to clock in that would wait with a newspaper to clock in. Once clocked in, they went into the bathroom to read for a while.
Enjoyed that timing a lot when I worked as an ad rep. Calling on or to customers for 7+ hours/day was a soul killer. But it all fell away when the ‘bell’ rang. Wasn’t a real bell but the thought was good enough.
My last two jobs were hourly – by choice. I wanted the freedom to have unpaid time off. My boss is cool with this. He doesn’t care how many hours I work or don’t work as long as I get the job done.
I automate office procedures. My boss gives me a requirement and I give him an estimate like, “I think I can get that done by next Thursday.” The time in between is very flexible.
I do excellent work (after 25 years working with Excel, one tends to get good at it) so my boss is willing to put up with the wait.
I worked for a very poorly managed, small R&D company in Rosemead, CA. On Friday, when the paychecks were handed out, it was a “Le Mans Start” to race to the parking lot and drive to the bank before the money ran out.
