I know some folks who leave their Christmas lights out all year, but only let them shine for six weeks – those weeks before, during and after Christmas.
Safer to leave them up (just cos they are up doesn’t mean they are ON) than to try that stoopy ladder trick over and over, every year.. Balance, or lack of, is part of that extreme sport we call aging.
Stopped putting lights up when I amost fell off the roof and and later the ladder. My health and well being are more important then a bunch of colored lights. Too expensive to hire it done on a fixed income, especially when Madicare cost does up more than the SS COLA, again.
I’m still a bit surprised some enterprising architect hasn’t built a decoration system into the house so that decorating is just a matter of flipping a switch. (the closest I’ve seen is a fellow down the street who has a life-size skeleton he simply re-dresses for the appropriate holiday)
One year Hubby went out and bought an artificial tree after Christmas. When we went to set it up the following season, we discovered it was nine feet tall. It ended up on the enclosed front porch and was never dismantled. We sold it with the house.
I only decorated the front porch railing. It was much safer and easier to put up and take down. I also put up lights for Halloween. Now, I’m in an apartment and my wife passed almost 3 years ago. I’ve given away my tree and other holiday stuff, since I go to my son’s house for the holidays.
Some years ago I decided that we had too many bear related ornaments on our tree. We had just bought a new tree so I had husband make a stand for the top tree shaped section of the old tree and set it up in the spare bedroom – aka “The Teddy Bears’ room”. I took some of the bear ornaments and put them on same, leaving plenty of bear ornaments on the main tree downstairs. Main tree in living room.
Husband liked the bear tree so much that the following year he bought a small (artificial also) tree for me to use and insisted that I put it on a trunk at the top of the stairs. It has since grown into a teddy bear village and is changed 11 times a year for different themes. (January is split between December and February.)
Time passed – we are donor members of a history museum and receive an annual brass ornament from them. These ornaments also were taking over the main tree – so now we have a small tree in our dining room – which is decorated as an 18th century tavern public room – with most of these ornaments – but again, there are still some of them on the main tree.
More time went by. We are both craft artists – I work in fiber/textiles and he works in a variety of media. Yes – again – our handmade ornaments were started to be too numerous on our main tree. So we have a small tree we setup at the entrance to our studio off our kitchen with most of the handmade ornaments and some on the main tree.

I think it is not that bad if Christmas lights in low-light cold regions, weren’t removed for long time, they need lights.

We never put any up, never have to take any down. Easy peasy!

We have a iron tree (that i put the lights on) that stays up and lit all year long. (It’s inside and makes a terrific night light.)

We need to call them “Holiday Lights” and turn them on for every big event. Along flying flags and seasonal banners.

I’ve had my Christmas wreath on the Front Door since 2020. And ornaments hanging from lamps and curtain rods for 24 years!
