Or—and I’m just speculatin’ here—you could be honest (to a degree) and tell Lena that the cookies weren’t as good as in years past, then ask her about the recipe with hopes of fixing it. Admittedly that wouldn’t be all that funny, but neither is the stale old “Lena’s a lousy cook and doesn’t know it” routine year in and year out.

On the other hand, here’s Crankshaft!

Sometimes a steam remoistening improves things. I adopt the old ‘dunk and soak’ coffee, milk… Schnapps.

We’re out of the bookstore and back to Crankshaft on a Tuesday. It must be the Christmas spirit.

They’re all afraid of offending Lena, because they don’t want worse assignments than they already have.

Don’t make her feel bad? Every year they tell her they suck. Actually, throughout the year whenever she bakes anything, so why worry now?

Ed is just too tactless to be believed! You can always count on him to hurt Lena like this. Of course, she could get back at him with this careless bus riding with having mothers chasing his school bus with lunch bags.

Ah, a classic Crankshaft strip: Lena’s terrible baking, her complete cluelessness about how bad her baking is, the attempts by the other drivers to be nice, Ed’s blurted-out semi-insult, and not a single FW character in sight. I have no complaints.

What does she do wrong time after time? If you follow a recipe, it’s not that hard. Are they overcooked? Does she consistently use baking soda instead of baking powder? (that ruins the entire batch….did that when my friend and I were about 12!) But at least, we learned our mistake. I’m a great baker now.

“You’ll have to give us the recipe.”

And be sure to not keep a copy for yourself!
