I tell people that Wallace The Brave is as good as Calvin And Hobbes.

“But it’s nothing like Calvin And Hobbes!” some of them say.

I didn’t say it was LIKE it; I said it was as GOOD AS it. And I stand by that assessment!

This strip is called Wallace The Brave and today Spud says he must “brave the elements to come meet Wallace”. He braved the elements to meet his friend Wallace The Brave.

Check out seagull’s eyes in Panel 2 top when he realizes Sterling is hurtling toward him!!

Then he flies off in the bottom panel. He won’t be hanging around, thank you very much.

On reading today’s strip a second time, I notice that one of the stars that Spud has seen is falling to the ground and two others have landed on the snow.

“Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket,

Save it for a rainy day."

Spud did move, up in the air, then back to the ground.

I’ve got to quit taking a sip of coffee before I read a comic. I’m going to choke someday. Spud is hilarious!

It’s moments like this where I wonder if Spud does these things because he knows, subconsciously, it creates content for the comic. :P

Yesterday it looked like they were headed for the water. Apparently they had lots more land below them.

“Wallace has more friends than Calvin”? Calvin has friends? Only Hobbes…

I like Seagull’s footprints in the snow. Seems he only flys when necessary. Will gives us so many tiny details to amuse us.

These comments can be dangerous. I had never heard of cul de sac and went to check it out and it started in 2007. That’s over 6500 days of comics I would have to catch up on! Good thing I’m out of work on a disability…

Sterling is thinking, “My, isn’t it cold?”

And then he sees Spud and suddenly remembers his favorite scene from “The Empire Strikes Back”.

“If only I had a light saber” Sterling muses. “But he probably smells worse on the inside.”

It’s hard to compare and personal preferences always get in the way. In my opinion, “Wallace” has a bit more depth and variety but “Calvin” was more consistently funny. Sometimes, the humor in “Wallace” seems a bit forced. But for kid strips, neither is as good, again my opinion, as “Cul-de-sac”. Thompson was not only very adept at getting into the mindsets of little kids but his artwork is amazingly good. The strip also wasn’t static as new characters were always being introduced. Who knows what new marvels he would have created if he hadn’t passed way too early. Plus the life lessons learned such as “you can’t tie down a banjo man” will live with you forever.

Could it be that Spud’s soft padded body put the brakes on the sled and saved the brothers from a deep plunge (and consequent maternal wrath)? An honorable sacrifice!
