Perhaps they live in or near Chicago. Valentine’s dinner was a REALLY big thing in Chicago to the point you needed to make reservations several months in advance to get into any restaurant on Valentines day in the city. Crab cakes were the specialty of many of the restaurants and was in high demand on Valentines day. Perhaps seafood in general is really good there on the whole; I had the best lobster bisque I’ve ever had in the downtown Marriott hotel when travelled there for business.
The fact that Arlo was able to get crab cakes at all on Valentines day from a restaurant in Chicago would be a special event indeed, and is something that Janis appears to appreciate.
Like others here, I like the way Jimmy portrays Arlo& Janis’s relationship. I keep hoping he’ll show us more of the next generation, Gene and Mary Lou. They also have a successful marriage but at a different stage of life.
Her expression and the question indicate that this wouldn’t have gone as well in real life. First, she didn’t offer to share, and second, she didn’t pick when.

Crab cakes, fried shrimp, scallops, YES! Clams and oysters, no. Just looking at those slimy things make me gag.

We learned long ago not to go to restaurants on Valentine’s or Mother’s Days. Too many people are out enjoying higher-than-normal prices.

Are two day old crab cakes any better than fresh frozen crab cakes that just came out of the microwave? I’m thinking no.
