I still don’t get all the staring at phones. I often forget to take my phone with me when I leave the house. I use mine primarily to get those security numbers for two-factor verification.
I’ve never used my phone while walking (not even sure what they’re looking at). But I always have my phone with me – in the shower or toilet, in case of accident – my contactless bank card app – my book, on the tram/bus, doctor or dentist waiting room – dictionary/translator – GPS – health app – alarm – agenda – 50+ fidelity cards – language lessons – bank accounts – doctor/dentist appointment – current news – email/SMSs – Skype – Facebook with my daughters and grand kids. All of the above I only use when stationary.
A study in NYC in 1980 found that only 3% were reading while walking and 2% were getting mugged; in 2024, 47% were on their phones, and 14% were walking into objects.
A Canadian comedian observed there was one good thing about zombies staring at their phone while they walked. It gives drivers a chance at seeing them on a dark winter morning, since they’re usually dressed in black.
Phones go with you for emergencies only; they are best turned off and kept in your pocket. Walking your dog is good for you and your dog. Fresh air, exercise, being together, and getting away from audio- and visual-clutter is a blessing for you both.
(1) exercise-walks, (2) scent-walks, or (3) off-lead walks give you a chance to watch – and learn so much about – your best friend. They can teach you something you cannot learn by doing anything else; why ruin the opportunity? Ask yourself: Why are you concentrating on something you stare at during the entire day? Do you not love your dog enough to enjoy walking together? Can’t you put your dog ahead of your phone during walks? Watch your dogs and learn from them while sharing a golden opportunity.
All it takes is one time when the person looking intently at the phone gets mugged. Hopefully all the mugger wants is money and not the whole purse/wallet and then the hell of replacing the drivers license, credit cards etc will happen, head on a swivel my friend, not every stranger on the street is friendly. A mugger will smile at you while you’re hanging over your money.
Walking one’s dog provides good opportunities to interact with the dog and enrich the bond eg surroundings and people all the while keeping awareness of the area for any issues eg broken glass, abandoned chicken bones, poisonous vegetation or loose pets to avoid problems. Sadly constant looking at one’s phone thwarts those opportunities.

At least the guy is walking, so many are just standing in the middle of the sidewalk, blocking the way.

Love the goofy teeth on the dog, at least the owner got the message and it wasn’t even on his phone.

It’s hard to take your person on a walk without him or her being distracted by something he or she sees (on his or her phone).

I don’t think it’s the speed the dog is mocking.

“What’s the difference between me looking at my phone and you stopping at every rock, shrub, and tree to sniff out who all has been there before you?”
grocks about 1 month ago
Actually, a dog would enjoy a slow walk with the chance to get good sniffs along the way.

This is so true of dog walkers today. In fact everyone that’s out and about including parents with kids!
The company they’re with isn’t stimulating enough and l’ve even seen a family sitting around a relative’s bed all glued to their phones!
