In “Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven”, by Mark Twain, new souls are issued with wings and harps, because that’s what they expect. They quickly realise that these are encumbrances which they don’t want, and quietly get rid of them, sometimes by giving them to newer arrivals.
