I’m guessing Joe did die, and was sent through the Fountain back to this life, probably by Marx. Some people know the future of Endtown from other realities, like Flask as the Duchess, and can make arrangements to guide the local history for the greater good. Marx and the Oracle are in on the plans, helping Flask, and the rats would be working on it. We’ve seen that Marx can send souls back to specific points, as he did with Flask. If this isn’t the original Joe, he would be one from a different but identical reality. There’s an historic event coming up that everyone’s preparing for, and the rats know that’s when they’ll get a break. Until then, they have to be patient, and patients.
They’re looking at the symbol as if it means something in this context. If it represents Time as an hourgless, and Infinity, then the pinch-point may represent the upcoming event that they’re preparing for. With realities grexing into each other, reducing their number, then that event might be the total collapse of all realities, followed by a “big bang” of realities multiplying and expanding.
I get the impression that this is Endtown before getting vaporized by a nuke. We’re probably at the time after Wally and Holly had left and this is what transpires before the great shutoff by Marx. (Just a hunch).
Yep, there immortal, and it’s clear they have a role to play and a goal to enforce, which starts to explain why they are sometimes the bads. because there not here to actually protect the trees just the forest.
“…But the rat came back the very next day, the rat came back—we thought he was a goner; but the rat came back, he just couldn’t stay away.” (altered a bit from a song by Harry S. Miller)

Maybe there was a glitch in the file upload, that either GoComics or Aaron (via uploading it again) will fix soon.

It’s a GoComics screw-up. Not Aaron Neathery’s fault. Dozens of comics are not loading.

I went back to a random older date, and then came back, and see today’s comic!

Characters are ALL in place? Does that include the inhabitants of Endtown and Wally/Kracky et al? Are we coming to an actual end of Endtown?

Ah! There it is. And…so it wasn’t going to be death, it was desertion.

Immortality on a crazy train is not so attractive. I wonder what awaits them at the end?

Endtown rats live one mile down, doo dah, doo dah.

They can confidently say they will see peace in their lifetime. Whether they are still sane is a separate problem.
