Wouldn’t matter anyway- every company has their own sizing, and thanks to ‘vanity sizing’ I can wear anything from a 4 to 14. None of it makes any sense.

    Get her jewelry, John.

That happened to me once. I know now I should have gotten her dress size.

Maybe I could have use the Al Bundy method.

If you don’t know the size always buy the smallest one. You’ll flatter her by telling her you think she’s that thin.

That must be so hard! Then again, from trying on clothes, how many do you have to try on before one looks good on you?

As for jewelry, it’s OK but very overpriced, and I hate throwing money away (stuff from BIL’s pawn shop is OK). I prefer things that are useful for me, like travel mugs, computer games, or books. (not stuff that is useful for him so much, like a mixer for me to make him stuff or a vacuum)

Better know the lady pretty well. I, for one, care nothing for jewelry. When my husband was alive, we would split the cost of something we wanted, but could live without, and give each other half of it. I made out like a bandit, though, since he gave me the other half for my Jan 1 birthday.

My brother in law’s approach was look for a woman close to the size of the woman you’re shopping for. With sad puppy dog eyes ask for assistance in shopping. Most women usually will agree to help because a) they tend to believe men are helpless and b) they love shopping even if it is for someone else.

When I need to buy clothes for someone, I find a salesperson as close to their build as possible—and if there isn’t one, I find a shopper and give them a “you’ll never believe what happened to me” story.

None of you have been there and, apparently, done that. The guy who shops for clothing for his wife has truly sought a personal expression of his caring for her. I know. I sold it to the guys. Jewelry is a cop out gift.

Buying gifts for women isn’t a mystery. Treat them as individual people, with specific and individual tastes and interests, and not as extensions of some generic female Borg-mind called “Women.” Is this really so hard to grasp? shakes head

If John knew, or at least thought for one minute that he was going to buy Ellie something to wear for Christmas, then he should have checked her clothing labels first before leaving the house. Of course, I’ll excuse him if she’s one of those kind of women that cuts the tags out of her clothes because she doesn’t want him (or anyone else) to know what size she wears. But still . . . after being married as long as they have, he should at least have an idea as to what size she is!

I’ve never wanted jewelery. Books would be my choice.Or a gift certificate from JoAnne’sbut please, no clothes! He always buy beige or tan. I don’t wear non-colors. You’d think after 30+ years he’d notice that I never were “earth tones”

How can you buy for the lady in your life? What is a 10? Small, tall, round, skinny. Then you get into misses, juniors, petites, etc. Aarrgghh!!! Men on the other hand 16 1/2 neck, 34 sleeve, #@ waist, and 30 inch leg, easy.

These are all good suggestions but I don’t think I could follow many of them. I would rather buy my own clothes to get what I wanted. I don’t wear jewellry, and usually look through kitchen equipment to pass on ideas. Books or DVDs are ok but my tastes are not the same as everyone elses.

Lynn is just getting a little too out of touch with 2011. I know this strip is a rerun, but I thought her motivation for re-writing it was to make it more relevant, not less.

Whatever you decide on, be sure you keep the receipt; odds are it’s going to go back. That’s why the lines at the returns counter after Christmas are longer than the ones at the check-out counter before. MyThreeSons had a pretty good idea, because it involved both parties agreeing on something they both wanted but neither would buy for theirself and benefitted both. I’m pretty sure something “special” got added by both, but not as the “big” gift.

John. Go into your bedroom. Check the tags on your wife’s clothes, especially ones she’s worn recently, to see what size she is. Duh. Or look in the laundry, you can find clothes tags there, too.
