Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for March 20, 2012
Transcript:
Dog: Okay, Shhtephan, your pals don't want to pay your ranshhome, so thish here's Beetle Bailey. He's gonna shoot you. Pastis: Shoot me? Does he know how? Dog: What do you mean, 'does he know how?' He's a soldier. Pastis: But this country's been in five wars and countless military excursions since his creation in 1950, and I don't think he's been in one of them. Dog: That ish a little odd. Beetle Bailey: We prefer lighthearted family fare. Pastis: By the way, are you and Sarge 'friends with benefits'?
rayannina over 12 years ago
Oh, Stephan, you did NOT just go there!
Peabody-Martini over 12 years ago
The military is now cool with it if they are. Though it would certainly explain a thing or three.

Which coast is Hi and Lois from in this battle? Beetle is related to Lois.
knight1192a over 12 years ago
Funny, I thought Beetle had benifits with Miss Buxley.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
This situation is intolerable! The West Coast forces must launch a retaliatory strike to free Cartoon-Pastis, before the East Coast gang tortures or executes him! (I can forgive his crude gallows humor under the circumstances.)FREE CARTOON-PASTIS!

That’s a question the Comics Curmudgeon’s been asking for quite a while, now. See also here – scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Friends with benefits? Only if you consider being beaten up a “benefit”.
crobinson019 over 12 years ago
According to my faulty memory and wikipedia, Beetle’s Girlfriend isn’t Ms Buxley, but Bunny

Can’t we all just get along?
SwimsWithSharks over 12 years ago
It’s cool. Give Beetle a rifle. I saw him fall asleep during range practice once.
JoeStrike over 12 years ago
Miss Buxley? Obviously Beetle’s ‘beard’; it’s a relationship that works for both of them, since Buxley and Sgt. Lugg are… never mind.
As for Beetle’s ‘combat’ record – I’ve been wondering about that for years – c’mon Mort, there are scads of laughs to be mined over there in Iraq!

I actually remember (somewhat hazily) about a strip where “Uncle Beetle” visits..
BTW: Thanks for yesterday’s explanation of the bi-polar clamps.

“Yup, lots of people don’t know that Beetle is Lois Flagston’s brother, and the uncle of Chip, Dot, and Ditto Flagston from ‘Hi and Lois’.”
Roger that, master. But you forgot Trixie.

Maybe Stephan is developing a case of Stockholm syndrome?

Despite a few additional characters and referring to a few modern devices, basically the comic strip “Beetle Bailey” has never left the 1950’s. Archaic references abound in BB. (For example, in the six years I was in the military I never once had a “weekend pass,” which is so coveted by Beetle and his pals. Unless you were scheduled for duty or on restriction, the weekend was yours to do whatever.) I believe old strips like “Beetle Bailey” are still printed in papers more out of habit than for any inherent quality.

Popeye tried dating Ms. Buxley but she didn’t want to be anchored down.

Maybe if he’s shot, he’ll never appear in another one of his cartoons. Wouldn’t that be novel.
Tue Elung-Jensen over 12 years ago
Plenty of excersises during the strips existence.
Davepostmp over 12 years ago
So don’t read it. I’ve found that those who don’t appreciate some humor don’t really know humor at all.
Davepostmp over 12 years ago
Where’s Stephan’s sgnificant other? And what’s his orientation, since he brought up the subject for a cheap shot?
starlilies over 12 years ago
=O Pastis, NOT NICE! Shoot him now, shoot him now!

Bill Mauldin never had too much trouble finding the lighter side of war to illustrate. But, then, WW II was a full-immersion type of war.

Julius (Gen. Halftrack’s driver) is the gay character in “Beetle Bailey.” But when all the DADT started, Julius was put on a back burner and almost disappeared. Now it’s time for Julius to come out and serve openly. I’ve never understood why BB only uses 10 percent of its characters. The rest appear so infrequently it’s easy to forget they exist.
