Here is a little something I found to celebrate todayTheRETURN of the DRAGON LADYMORE ALL-NEW HOTSHOT CHARLIEA Penny for Your Thoughts, Hotshot!Special! ALL NEW HOTSHOT ADVENTURES!EXCITEMENT AND INTRIGUE IN THE ORIENTYou already have one Terry, you don’t need another. (grin)And now back to your regularly scheduled Dick Tracy.
For a full year Team Tracy has astounded us with great art, adventure, and the return of characters that had been laid to rest in the cartoonist’s graveyard. Today’s strip is the high water mark so far – a tribute to the genius of Milton Caniff: Pat Ryan, Terry and Hot Shot Charlie! thanks for reviving our favorite memories!
WOW! My youth is reborn!Charles C. Charles, Hotshot Charlie! And a silent nod to T. Lee! —Wingy has grown up just fine, Hotshot hasn’t aged at all! This is super, Team Tracy!
Great, awesome, terrific, wow! That’s this comic strip known as Dick Tracy. I know I’m repeating myself a bit but I’ve always believed in giving credit when credit is due. Thanks team Tracy, for helping me (and everyone) to get through another day.
Charles C. Charles with pics of Terry Lee and Milt Caniff adorning the walls! Fantastic! Great to see that Air Cathay continues to this day! Wonder if ’ol Chopsticks Joe is skulking around somewhere…? Thanks Team Tracy for such a great strip today!
none of these “guest shots” mean anything to me. i know they are from terry and the pirated etc, but i never read that so i have no idea who these people are… but can mike get in legal trouble for using them? wouldnt they be copyrighted?
@tsull2121Milton Caniff’’s Terry And The Pirates from 1934 to 1946 is just about the greatest adventure strip ever. Different from our own beloved Dick Tracy, the action in Terry took place in China and was as well written and drawn as anything you’re going to find in the comics. The Dragon Lady, Burma, April Kane, Captain Blaze, Connie, Big Stoop, Normandie, Dude Hennick, etc. were some of the best characters ever. Do yourself a favor and read it sometime. You won’t be sorry. Sidenote: no one can count the amount of comic strip and comic book artists who swiped Caniff’s art style and poses. Sidenote#2: the strip ended in the 1970’s and a few quick one-off tribute dailies like these aren’t likely to create a law suit between anyone. Beside, both strips were/are controlled by the same company, Chicago Tribune Services.
Holy Moe! Terry and the Pirates!I didn’t follow the strip (it wasn’t carried in any of the local papers by the ‘60s, and even so, Milton Caniff had moved on to Steve Canyon by then), so I didn’t recognize Hotshot Charlie (and I thought that was Steve in panel 1).But I really appreciate Team Tracy’s weaving the comic strip reality together!Ah, if only we could have a story in which the characters worked together, instead of just making a cameo appearance… (With my luck it will happen someday, and Tracy will be teamed with Smokey Stover or the Katzenjamer Kids!)
On a wholly divergent note (Holy Divergent Note, Batman!), does anyone else remember Chuck McCann’s TV show Sunday mornings on WPIX New York? Chuck – tall and heavy-set – would read Tracy, Terry and Little Orphan Annie, while dressed as Tracy, Annie and the Dragon Lady! Hilarious stuff!
Okay comic strip fans … do any of you know the name of the leading character in another strip who had the same last name as Terry Lee?-HINT: This character was created by a comic strip artist who Caniff always said was one of his major inspirations and influences.
Through the swirling mists of time, here they comeOld favorites and familiars, though strangers to someSome may not care about characters pastBut when they appear, I think it’s a gasFramed in the window, Why it’s a DC-3That’s something, today, I didn’t expect to see(like I expected to see it any other day)It flew the “Hump” and lifted to BerlinMany airborne troops were carried withinYour jet fighters and bombers are a sight to beholdBut that old crate still carries the loadTo some it’s just a anachronism that’s amusingly quaint And others it makes quite giddy and faint A plane that has reached icon statusIt’s fame reaches up into the stratus.
Thanks Maxine, margueritem, ElGuapo, Det.DD and Doc 1947G, for your comments.
Some of the characters I remember from long ago, some I never knew because I decided I was too grown up for comics. Now I couldn’t enjoy the stories and characters without all of you who comment on this site.
Little Wingy was a college student when she last appeared on March 15, 1985, during the Normal Jones story. Terry’s picture of Wingy comes from Oct. 30, 1954, and she is referring to “Happy”, Rughead’s trigger man.
Another redhead with freckles? Can I start the “he looks like Jimmy Olsen, Junior Tracy, Hot Rize, ElGuapo, etc.” thread? I mean we all look alike, right?
They say that the only plane that can replace a DC-3 is another DC-3. Some are still flying in commercial service, but I don’t think the C-130 flies commercially.

I’ve only read Terry and the Pirates in reprints and I’ve never seen a whole story with Charles C. Charles but this strip is fun anyway.

No that’s Milton Caniff, the creator of Terry and The Pirates. It looks like it’s based on a self-portrait he did of himself in his younger days.
