Isn’t it sad that initial attractions are based upon how a person looks. One of the hardest lessons in life is to learn that you are not beautiful but one of the homely people of the world. Some people are blessed, some are not.
I’ve been reading the older strips. I’ve reached late 2003. In November of that year, Delta fell hard for the substitute teacher. Interesting to compare her attitude then to the current strip.
I was thinking the guy in the floral shirt might be David Crosby after a few weeks on the Nutrisystem diet, Art, but you may be right…he DOES look a little like Ron Jeremy.
Now if this were about women, there’d be all kinds of howls and yowls about sexism, stereotypes, and this and that. But you can stereotype men, be sexist towards them, and be prejudiced against them all you want.
Once again, I don’t see you criticizing Brad, Gunther and Knute for being “shallow” and dating good looking girls. Why aren’t you encouraging them to find the “inner beauty” in the local homely females? I’m sure if they looked hard enough they could find some.
Uh, yeah, right. I’m not saying that these girls don’t have great qualities, but I don’t think for a minute that looks didn’t come into play with the original attraction, particularly with Brad’s interest in Toni. I also doubt that the Brad/Toni relationship would engender a fraction of the interest among the guys on this board if Toni were the female equivalent of Ox or Gunther in looks, no matter how much “inner beauty” she had.
‘Who doesn’t have to work as hard"? Excuse me, women work far harder than men. Most of them not only work full-time, but the majority of breadwinners are now women, the majority of degree-earners are women, and the majority of housework and child-rearing is still done by women. Men, by contrast, are dropping out of college in increasing numbers and living in their parents’ basement playing videogames until they’re 30. Men work harder, ha. If only.
Welcome to 2012. In addition to that charming statistic, let’s also add the one where the majority of people in this country are single, not married. So why would we elect married leaders who focus on family when that only represents a minority of the people who live in this country?
Night-Gaunt, Thanks for your comment yesterday. Apparently Stoebel was off on quite a few things, so that’s why I said to take it for what it’s worth. Read the reviews
I remember a cartoon with Zippy the Pinhead: He sees a bunch of people swimming or walking around on the deck – they look pretty much like the assortment in the above frames – except with little or no clothing. Zippy says “Yow – Everybody out of the genetic pool!”
Exactly my point! And the point I was trying to make to Mordock. It’s pretty normal that both males and females, particularly teenagers, are attracted to people they find good looking. It doesn’t mean that’s all there will be or need to have to keep a longterm relationship going, but it is often what first draws people to each other.
Ox is destined fot Tiffany. She likes them big strong and dumb. However, Ox is by no means as dumb as he seems to be. Interesting.Delta is long overdue a boyfriend. Apart from being a very nice girl (in spite of her ambition) she’s gorgeous!Luann should keep her sharp little claws out of Tiff and Delta’s romances. While normally a sympathetic character she has one major flaw. She thinks it’s every man for herself.
Not getting this strip at all. Luann wants to become an actress (WTF) and Delta has no interest in the opposite sex. Next thing you know she’ll be OUT. Yeah, Luann, realistic goal there of becoming actress through the community college. Dang, this strip is going downhill and I have been reading it for well over 10 years.
Reading through the comments of the past few days, I find it offensive how many people think Delta is “wrong”.
She can live however she wants to. Luann has no right to pressure Delta into chasing men. This goes on in high schools all the time, and like it or not, it’s peer pressure and bullying.
“Don’t believe the women libbers who claim otherwise look at the overall effects. Who lives longer and inherits all the money? Who decides upon the single biggest purchase (a house), who doesn’t have to work as hard. Comparing similar jobs and years of experience who makes more money, women according to 1990 census data. "-Add to that, When was the last time the president would have been elected if not for the majority support of women?-(Not that they haven’t done a fine job of selecting, just noting that they’ve been decisive in the final result.)
“And Luann is qualified to be a love adviser how?”-We’re all qualified to advise. It may not be the best advice and may not apply in the particular situation but even bad advice can be useful.-Think back: Hogan’s Heroes. There was a bomb. There were two wires. If Hogan cut the right one, they were safe. If Hogan cut the wrong one, they would die. -Hogan asked Colonel Klink which wire to cut. Klink admitted he doesn’t know. Hogan insisted. Klink picked a wire. -Hogan cut the other wire. It was the right one. They were saved-“Why did you ask if you weren’t going to cut the one I picked?”“I knew you would pick the wrong one.”
I don’t disagree with you. I was responding to a poster who repeatedly calls Luann shallow for falling for guys she considers physically attractive (and probably interesting in other ways) rather than for the least attractive, socially awkward guys in the strip. I’m glad Evans hasn’t followed that particular fantasy fulfillment cliche (not his fantasy, but generally speaking) that has shown up in a lot of other film/tv venues. Instead, he’s taking a more realistic approach with who draws teens’ romantic interest. (I still haven’t figured out Rosa’s interest in Gunther, though, but I hope he gains a little courage in that department.)
Re Delta & Ox – No way! Really – none of the guys in the recent Luann arcs. Maybe a male Tiffany – a guy who thinks he walks on water – and Delta just loves to deliver jab after jab.
All this traffic & no gal hits? Is there a sign behind them saying, stop by, if you have no significant other? Maybe some women should walk by?Are they on a college campus?

I agree with Wesley. OX looks better than the whole lot of them. By the looks of the 2 panels Ox most likely has the intelligence.
