Holy crossovers Tracy fans! From one crossover straight into another. It looks like Mike has gone batty on us, but in a good way.For those who don’t get the inside joke references, here are some links to help out:Bob Kane – co-creator of Batman and The Penguin, to name a few.Dick Sprang – Original designer of The RiddlerJerry Robinson – Arguable creator of The Joker and Alfred PennyworthI wonder if there are a couple more henchmen named Finger and Roussos somewhere in the wings. (grin)Take note of the two umbrellas in panel two. Any guesses on who “The Boss” is? Yesterday, posters DrSid1 and Stagger Lee gave spoilers about the “brother”.I can hardly wait until tomorrow for the Sunday on this one! Same Tracy time. Same Tracy forum.
It’s too much to ask in this day and age but todays strip makes me long for this team to do a good old fashion golden age version of Batman or Superman strip in a daily basis.
All of this makes my post for yesterday’s cartoon seem almost prophetic:
Many comic book critics believe that Bob Kane (Batman) used Broadway Bates as the model for the Penguin, he denied it of course (Kane claimed he got the idea from the Penguin on the “Cool” cigarettes package); of course anyone who is into comics history knows that Bob Kane was well known for “borrowing” from other artists
Good grief! Can this be G*th*m City, Tracy fans? Does the intrepid detective know the Cowled Crusader and his kid-sidekick? Is there a dirty bird about to run amuck? Stay tooned, same Tracy time, same Tracy netsite!
I doubt that characters from Batman will interact directly with Tracy characters like Walt did. Either way though, I think this is a very cool development, and I look forward to Sunday’s strip!
I had left this strip a couple-few years back because it was lame and boring with art about the same. I saw a comment on Gasoline Alley about Mr Wallet being here and so I dropped in. This is shockingly good. I went as far back as August to try and catch up but would someone please be kind enough to tell me if the artist and/or writer have changed and when that happened?
Groan. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a love/hate relationship w/ a comicstrip. But I shall keep my big fat opionated text shut. AND my Spec Productions Missing Years order has arrived…time to enjoy some primo 1965-66 Gould.
Once upon a time in another city, there were devious thugs none too pretty.Robinson, Kane and some cat, Sprang, dirty deeds was their thing.A signal appeared high in the sky, leaving Tracy fans to wonder whysuch a sight would make the bosslose his cool and become cross.I gaze up at night and spy the Moon.I think of Her and start to swoon.None too soon can tomorrow greet us;all are greedy for more Stanton and Curtis
Good Morning Detectives and others who wear a cowl….We have Robinson, Sprang and Kane as part of a criminal gang…..so does this mean their boss is…..the FINGER?
Maybe, but kid adventurers were common back then, going back at least to Josie O’Gorman, teenage Secret Service agent (and in those days the Secret Service did all the work done today by the CIA and the FBI), created by, of all people, L. Frank Baum.
How wonderful to see this tribute to the GA Batman artists in Dick Tracy! Max Collins and I pitched a retro-style Tracy/Batman cross-over to DC some years back, but couldn’t make it fly. Great to see Mike and Joe having some fun with the notion!
Born Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, the Penguin, murdered his three brothers; Jason, William and Robert. They all attacked him and his birds one night and he retaliated in time. Jason died due to poisoning, William in a hit-and-run, and Robert in a freak accident which left him at the bottom of a frozen lake.
You know it dawned on me awhile back. None of my favorite Superheroes have any super powers.Batman of courseThe PunisherNightwing but I was never a Robin fan. Go figure.Judge Dredd although I’m not sure if he counts as a Superhero?.Wonder what that says about me?
This is trippy. Tracy, Walt, Penguin, and Gotham City all in one week? The only way to top this is to throw in a little Moon Maid action. We’re due for some lunar madness, aren’t we?
ok, so once again team tracy is taking a page literally out of the “everything thats old is new again book” and reintroducing someone named broadway bates. umm.. ok, but since i wasnt around at the time he first appeared i have no freaking clue who he is and no idea about his backstory etc.. so to me, today’s strip is DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to copyright infringement, even tho in the comics batman doesnt use the bat-signal anymore. i’ll wait to see how this unfolds, and tho i didnt originally “get” the springer connection, i obviously got the kane reference, and i thought the “robinson” thing was a reference to robin himself, didnt know who jerry robinson is.. i always thought bob kane created joker. ah well.. like i said, i’ll wait and see how this all unfolds. by the way, i am pretty sure that “it’s just me” but the daily clamoring for another appearance from moon maid is getting a tad bit annoying.. i’m just sayin’
Speaking of cross-pollenation, the look of Batman, from Golden Age thru the late 50’s owes homage of sorts to the Tracy look, thanks to Robinson and Sprang.

Ok, I’ll bite! If the “Boss” is the Penguin, who is his brother? I don’t recall Mr. Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot having any siblings.

I don’t understand your reply to Logan Sackett. He must obviously be referring to the difference between Mr. Locher’s art and the art of Joe Staton.

Funny enough, I’m also reading the 30’s strips again… :) Double the Broadway, double the fun!
