I’ll be 44 in a couple weeks, the past year or two my memory has gone down the drain! I’ve always been the type who could easily recall names, faces, past conversations… hope I’m not getting dementia already!
My problem is that often I remember only one verse from the song, and end up singing (not out loud) that same verse over and over until it finally gets out of my head!
Something like that happened to me yesterday. I was trying to remember who said “The past is never dead. It’s not even past” and while I couldn’t recall Faulkner’s name, I remembered Yoknapatawpha County.
I have a friend who’s MP3, that she still listens to, has all of the songs that I grew up with, on the radio. I’m hard pressed not to sing along with them but it irritates her when people sing in her car even though i have a nice voice- she says. She is a-typical, I’m relieved when I can put my earbuds in and go for a walk belting out my tunes.. All these years later I learned that singing is my way of self soothing. For some reason I wasn’t allowed to sing. In many instances, even in my bedroom with my door closed, I got in trouble for singing slash self soothing, but my friend was nice about it, not one of ‘them’. I don’t know why people are so petty with me when I sing and they want to shut me down and other people say that I bless them with my voice. People are so confusing.
Almost 70 here, my short term memory was always poor, names especially so I don’t worry about it. I find people who remember their childhood phone numbers as scary…
I recently read a study about the “It’s on the tip of my tongue” syndrome. They said in most cases as you age, the tip of the tongue thing happens because YOU KNOW TOO MUCH, and your brain has more to sift through to find the answer! My brain, for instance, has to sift through three hours tours, a house in Bedrock, Scooby snacks, and the boys in the chorus before I can get to Pertinent Facts. Not that songs from 1960’s cartoons and sitcoms aren’t pertinent, of course.

Put up some posters, maybe someone will find it. But if you offer a reward, you’re wasting your money.

I sometimes blame age for lack of memory, but I really think I remember what I want to remember.

Husband actually has dementia and when he is in the car with me, I put the radio on the oldies channel. He can remember most of the words.

One of the joys of life is to hear a song you haven’t heard in 50 years, and sing along with it.
