I have had moments in my life where I have done the same thing as Georgia except with the addition that after I said something talking about myself, I realized with horror that the comment applied directly to the person to whom I was speaking and it was not in a positive way.
I recently cut my hair again after having let it grow long because with age it thins out and it didn’t look good anymore. Elly’s hair looks fine, so there’s no reason to cut it. But there’s a reason older women wear their hair short, thin hair doesn’t look that good when it’s long.
People were always telling me I should “cut Elly’s hair”. This would have taken away a very recognizable feature of the character, so the best I could do was to bunch it up or tie it back. This strip gave me the opportunity to address the readers’ observation.
I had “lion hair” all my life, it was hard to maintain outside of braids and weaves so I decided to cut it all off when I was in my early twenties as a sign on maturity. I’ve had short hair since and now when it grows, it turns into a mini Afro before I cut it again. No more weaves, no more braids and especially no more perms. My hair is now all natural.
As a long hair myself I say you should never cut your hair just because you feel your age requires it. If you want to cut it because you want to then do it, but never do something to your hair you don’t want to just because you think people expect you to.
In the arc, Georgia did something to her appearance that she felt she wanted to do ! Awesome for her, and she should be able to celebrate that feeling with her friend without worry it will offend her friend. If Elly truly is her friend, then she should be happy for Georgia and not feel offended and if she felt “dowdy” then maybe it was because she truly feels she looks dowdy and wishes she had to gumption to cut her own hair…..
I cut my hair every 2 to 3 years. I let it grow to my waist then hack it off to the chin only to start the cycle again. I am blessed with thick, naturally wavy, naturally blonde hair so I get to donate about 15 inches each time I cut it. My husband loves it short but it is so much work to make it look nice. With long hair, you don’t have “good hair days” or “bad hair days”, just hair days! As my hair is beginning to lose its color and go white, I probably won’t be able to keep donating as most want 10% or less of gray hair. I will probably keep it long (although I look better with it short) because I am cheap and lazy. I don’t want to have to pay for haircuts on a monthly basis and I don’t want to mess with curling irons and hairspray. Not going to dye it either, when its gray, its gray.
Women can wear their hair however they want to. My hair is thin, straight as a rod and I wear it long. I don’t like fussing with my hair; I don’t even use a hairdryer, just let it dry naturally. My husband like it and I can put it up or in a pony tail when I want it out of my face. I think women who have their hair hanging in their face and have to keep fussing with it to keep it out of their eyes or mouth are the ones who look ridiculous!

I keep my hair short, much to the chagrin of my mother, who hasn’t changed her style since she was in her 20’s.

I still wear my hair long. My husband loves it, my daughters love it, but most importantly, I love it.

Growing up, I always loved when Aunt Georgia would make an appearance! It was the only time I got to see a grown up with my name!

Prior to this Georgia had that “covered wagon” hairdo. Some noted she looked like a grown-up version of April.

Usually Phil is the one who says something dumb, but in this case Georgia acted retarded.
Today’s lesson: Never go Phil retard.
