This does make me wonder how many times parents have sent their kids out to play just because the parent wanted to be alone.

I think what is really happening here is that Elly is working on the computer that she has previously shunned in favor of her typewriter, and she doesn’t want Elizabeth to know that she has betrayed the faith with the typewriter by working on the computer in secret.

Go outside so I can enjoy inside.

I think Ellie is doing actual work, so she has an excuse.

I love rainy days. I can be indoors without that nagging sense of guilt that I’m supposed to be outside somehow taking advantage of the weather. Thanks, Mom!

My mother’s mantra, also.

My mom would literally say the same thing. So I would just take my book and go sit on the front steps, which isn’t what she meant but, hey, I was outside and all she said was go outside. Personally, I think kids are driven out of the house so moms can get a little quiet.

Just a curious question. If the sun is shining then why does it look like moonshine outside the window? When the sun is shining and Liz is that close to the window glass you should be able to see the color of her red shirt.

That’s right. Parents are the masters of “Do what I say, not what I do.” Now go “do” things quietly somewhere else.

I don’t see that Elly sent Liz outside in order to get “peace and quiet”. After all, Liz was reading a book and that’s about the quietest activity there is.

Looking back at the 7/6/1992 strip I thought I would find a typewriter instead of that CRT. I was wrong.

The younger generation needs the sunshine and blooming flowers. The older ones had their share when they were young.

if her mom is working then she has a legitimate excuse to be inside.

Elizabeth has no rights. She is Elly’s property, and can be made to go outside, do chores, or be bought and sold whenever John and Elly decide to send her to the auction block.

That can be a deflection, where the mother attacks her kids in some other way because she does not know what to say. An example I had seen was with a boy who was a big Yankees fan. He was talking about the team when his exasperated mother yelled “I wish you would focus on your schoolwork as much as you do on the Yankee and their batting averages!” This scared the kid into thinking he did something bad, and his father intervened later, telling the mother that the kid was getting As & Bs, and there was no need to yell at him about school. Defeated, she admitted she did not know what to say as she was sick of hearing about sports, and went to a good punching bag for kids, yelling at them about school.
