The guy in the back row is trying to drum up some business while the lady in the formal gown on the left front of the stage keeps harping on it. Too much stress and turmoil.
“Everyone, B sharp (C here) – take note of what he’s reeding. You’ll all be expected to measure up. I don’t want you to fall flat when it’s your turn.”
Oboe reeds are frightfully expensive! They only last a few days while being used frequently. Oboes are also some of the more expensive instruments… and are one of the hardest instruments to master. Kudos to anyone who can play one!
I played Illinois Jaquet’s arrangement of “Round Midnight” and my own of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” on my bassoon to get into the high school jazz band. For the next three years we closed all of our concerts with “Round Midnight.” The most terrifying 6 minutes of my life.

My son played a tuba solo of If I were a Rich Man at a high school halftime show when he was head drum major, but that’s not a reed instrument.

I would hate to be the guy sitting in front of the sousaphone. (Bell faces forward.)

This actually would work as the title for an actual big-band jazz number, especially if the sax section does a lot of doubling.
