I am assuming that he is talking about the statue of david – he is stating that A Hard Days Night is a classic – not a pop song

It sure is a pop song – and nothing wrong with classed as that. One of the top ones from the genre :D

It depends on the lawn. If you think about it, even the statue of Liberty can technically be classified as a lawn ornament.

Feeling old here… Frazz’s last comment, to me, suggested the extremely iconic nature of both works of art. (And Michelangelo’s David was originally commissioned to decorate the roofline of Florence Cathedral, but I kind of like ‘lawn ornament.’)

The Beatles are the apex of pop/rock. I love and “worship” them! “They” say you can’t like beatles and Stones; well, they don’t know me and my friends. Also, I love jazz (can anyone ever surpass Ella or Sassy?), classical, R&B, etc. Music is the god, these major artists are avatars. It all makes me dance, laugh, cry, change the level of my day. I was there when this song came out, and I’m glad to be alive as it turns 50. Bless the Beatles—they’ve enhanced my life.

I have a CD of early Sophie Tucker recordings, including one of her big hit “Some Of These Days” that was recorded in 1911 but restored to near-contemporary sound. That’s 103 years old and still a great “pop” song. Widen your horizons!

That river in Egypt sure does have a strong pull.

How can those things be 50? I remember them clearly and I’m only 29…

“A Hard Day’s Night” may be old, but it’s clean. Oh aye, it’s a clean old song! (TCM just played the movie yesterday. Watched it and DVRed it even though we have the DVD. Never can resist it.) Sir, can we have our youth back, sir, please sir? Very nice tribute, Mr. Mallett!

you people need to do a search for “david the gnome” it’s embarrassing to see people attributing this reference to ancient sculptures. The issue Frazz is bringing up isn’t high art, but iconicism. About the only lawn ornament more iconic than David might be pink flamingos, though one could argue that the pink flamingos are more infamous than iconic. Frazz isn’t claiming that “Hard Day’s Night” is MORE than a pop song, just that it’s one of THE pop songs.

And for those of us who were children of the 80s, as of several years ago, The Little Mermaid came out closer to the moon landing than to the present day.

In almost all places where you can buy lawn ornaments there is a Venus, a David, and a Flamingo besides all the garden gnomes.
