My mother and my brother both missed being born on February 29 by a few days, but in opposite directions. And my grandfather missed it by about a week. I always thought that was interesting, though I may be the only one.
Because people who are born on February 29 always (?) celebrate their birth on the 28th of February. At least that way it’s the same month. So… not interesting.
As Winter clings on we need more celebrations. It just keeps the seasons aligned with the decreed calendar. Kind of like jiggering the clock so you don’t waste daylight before getting to work. It should be Election Day, lets get this over with in a new spring, not a dying autumn. Vote Vermin Supreme.
I glanced at my digital watch on Tuesday and saw that it was incorrectly displaying March 2 as the date, so Ireset it. But all day Monday it had been, presumably, incorrectly displaying March 1; why had I not noticed the error earlier?
I believe the reason is that I knew Monday was “leap year day” and never needed my watch to tell me it was February 29. I doubtless checked the time on numerous occasions without “seeing” the incorrect date, even though it is continuously displayed.
But despite “knowing” it was leap year day I never thought to reset my watch!
When confronted with the question as to whether any given observation is interesting (or noble, or fatuous, or clever, or insipid, or pertinent, or …..), the only appropriate response is “YMMV”.
When I was teaching, I usually wrote the date on the board along with what we were doing for that day.
For “fun” (and to “mess” with some of the kids) when a new month began I would often continue dates from the previous month: For instance, I would write today’s date as February 30. Sometimes I would continue it for one or two more days: February 31, February 32, …

Wouldn’t that be the 29th?

If your birthday was on February 29th, what would you say to someone who asked if that was on a leap year?

More interesting are those people who, when you tell them your birthday is February 29, ask if it was on a leap year.

Here’s an observation I posted to back in 1988:

Yeah, Caulfield, you’re boring.

Since Caulfield made that comment two days ago, is that a leap yawner?

And yet another bad assumption by a kid. Why does he think people ask that? Nobody asks him that.

It is an interesting point. Do Leap Day people always back up their birthday, instead of forwarding it?
