Earliest evidence (so far) for this idea gives credit to the founder of the Terrytoons animation studio, Paul Terry. He was quoted in a syndicated New York-based gossip column on 6/19/1937 as saying, "When I feel like exercising, I just lie down until the feeling goes away.” IMHO it was profound then, and it still is now. :-)
