Flip Wlson had several routines regarding ladies’ dresses. One had a great punchline, “The Devil seems to do a lot for you, what’s he ever done for me?” asked the preacher after his wife told him that the Devil made her buy that dress. “I asked him that,” she said, “He told me that if it weren’t for him, you would not have a job.”
I’m no expert in women’s fashion, but that dress looks fine to me. It seems appropriate for her age and body type and, if anything, it looks more stylish to my untrained eye than what Loretta usually wears. And from her facial expression she seems to be feeling a pure and simple joy that’s downright touching considering how cynical she usually is.
I know the whole point of the strip is that these two never stop sniping at each other, but this strikes me as a rare moment where I would expect Leroy to be happy for Loretta. Of course that I would expect such a thing just speaks to a lack of understanding of the premise of the strip, or at least of how consistently it’s upheld.
I think the point is she buys a lot of dresses. Women have this thing about needing just the right dress for a certain occasion. Then that dress sits in the closet.

My daughters used to watch “Say Yes to the dress”. I told them they should just “Say No to the Show”.

I agree with Leroy; she should have said “No”.

Leroy, surely you’ve realized by now Loretta can’t say no to the dress, much less most anything else.
