Luann: "Acting is a hard way to make a living, y'know. In Hollywood OR on Broadway" Tiffany: "Most films aren't made in either place, Luann. They're made in England or India. Even Iowa" Luann: "Fine. My POINT is, there are millions of actors and very few jobs" Tiffany: "That's why I don't plan to be an actor. I plan to be a star" Luann: "I don't see how you can be a star without being an actor" Tiffany: "And there's your problem"

Actually you can be a star without being an actor its called reality tv shows.
TooOldToBeCool over 12 years ago
Tiffany could always be adopted by the Kardashians.
kfccanada over 12 years ago
Tiffany just expects to attain the glory of being a star without having to do the work of being an actor. Am sure there are lots of situations like that in Hollywood. However, the strategy just may not work for Tiffany…she just may be expected to have beauty…and brains….much to her chagrin.

I would love to see a week or so of Brad and Toni. It’s been a long time since they were in this comic strip.

Wow…I hate to admit it, but Tiffany actually has a valid point. She may even get lucky enough to pull it off……

Peter O’Toole ! Lawrence of Arabia, A Lion in Winter. More to the point of this thread, his line in “My Favorite Year”, “I’m not an actor, I’m a movie star !”

So Tiff is going to use the Paris Hilton Plan to fame.

And a perfect illustration of the difference. Wellsaid — bravo!

Since Luann is talking to Tiff … doesn’t she mean :" I don’t see how you can be a star without being an actress" , since they are both female.
barbarasbrute over 12 years ago
Sadly, even in real life, it’s the rude, pushy, obnoxious ones that are noticed and promoted.I still think that if Tiff got even one teeny break in something in her life, she’d be happier and fit right in with the rest. But, then her character wouldn’t be so amusing. So………………………

Tiffany has an unrealistic view of the world and how it works. This will cause her to make decisions with consequences that will cause her to feel hurt She is incapable of realizing this via a sensible discussion.
In my view, this qualifies her as being mentally ill.
In addition, to get started on a good career path, one needs to establish some credibility / credentials. This is true for actors as well as engineers and other professions, regardless of how much talent someone has. Luann will get that from college. Tiffany doesn’t realize the days of “being discovered” are long gone.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
Alarmingly, Tiffany today is showing a better understanding of contemporary show business (emphasis on business) than is Luann. While Luann’s approach is more more likely to be personally rewarding, if—and that is a HUGE IF—Tiffany gets lucky, she could indeed vault to celebrity-“stardom” and skip learning to act altogether. Her chances are statistically very poor, but it is possible….

I can’t believe Lu Ann and her friends are finally graduating high school and going to college. They have been children for 25 years or so. This is major, folks. A major transition. Young adulthood, here we come.
I could see Tiffany changing her mind and joining Lu Ann at junior college. I don’t think Greg Evans will be able to pass up the opportunity for all the gags about the Tiff/Lu rivalry in college. Competing for the same roles in the drama department productions, and possibly competing for the same guys. And having Tiff & Lu continue to appear in the same classroom together.
imbaldeagle over 12 years ago
Tiff hasn’t understood what high school is all about – the same will be true of college. And life. She’s all about self-promotion. The term starlet comes to mind. All froth and hope and self delusion.

Tiffany has a very inflated head, more than likely something is going to come to burst that bubble.
StCleve72 over 12 years ago
Nice point. O’Toole was an amazing actor. Did you enjoy the Ruling Class which I think was his best?
rmleon over 12 years ago
Maybe Tiff will actually grow up, become less selfish and self-centered. Maybe once Tiff does a little growing up, then Lu and Tiff could be true pals.
Mordock999 over 12 years ago
Let’s see. What DOES the future HOLD for THESE two?
Lemme look in My swirling cup ’o Magic COFFEE:
I see the two of them attending the SAME acting class at Junior College.
I see the two of them continually SNIPING at each other during class, UNTIL…..,they spot a Handsome, Vapid, Hunk.
I see the two of THEM vying for his attention.
I see the Hunk Predictably falling for Luann.
I see Luann making the Usual excuses NOT to have a relationship with him, yet.
I see Luann FINALLY falling for him, years later, Just as his leaves for for his big acting break in Hollywood. NEVER to be SEEN again, except on the big screen.I see Luann go CRYING to Her friends, her Mom and eventually Gunther, the ONLY Guy who REALLY cares for Her.
I see ENRAGED Fans Surrounding a TRAPPED Evans at a Future Comics-Con.
Ah, GLAD that’s Settled.
Hey, anybody got the “PowerBall” numbers????

Geeezz… I don’t usually, almost never fuss about comic strip content, but this one is tired. Some people just have to learn the hard way; let Tiff learn the hard way and move on.

Ah. Tiffany aspires to be like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton — a skanky no talent who is famous for being famous, the subject of tabloids and paparazzi who crashes her Ferrari on her way to rehab. I doubt she is rich enough to pull it off. More likely she will end up as a cocktail waitress in a casino somewhere.
BillWa over 12 years ago
Oh how i hate to agree with Tiffany, but looking at the shows over the past twenty years, especially on Disney channel, I have to concede to Tiffany. However, Stage work is different. A TV or movie actor will play the same character every time, may be a different character, but it is basically the same, but stage actors HAVE to be versitale. Support the Arts, go see a play tonight!

Go for it, Tiffy!
eocene82 over 12 years ago
Sheesh, Luann sounds like every other side character out there who drags down the protagonist by telling them they’ll never ever reach their dreams, so why bother trying. Does that make Tiffany technically the hero? She may have high, unrealistic expectations, but she’s the only one who has a solid goal and who has worked really hard towards really getting it (ie, working as a gofer and assistant for a major motion picture during her break from school, all her work getting modeling gigs and building a real resume, etc). Other famous people have gotten their start this way. Why is it so unreasonable? Fortune favors the bold, as they say. Sure, Tiffany might not make it, but at least she’s trying and gaining real experience, and she might find something worthwhile along the way. Luann just sits around and mopes, and acts like she’s morally superior because she has some vague plans of maybe college for the distant future.

There are a lot of pretty faces in LA trying to get any role in movies. You have to have a little something extra to make it big. With Tiffany’s idiocy, she may well end up in porn vidios.
Simon_Jester over 12 years ago
Interesting you should mention Peter O’Toole. In the film My Favorite Year, his character actually has a line that says, “I’m a STAR, not and actor!”
cjswan232482 over 12 years ago
Tiffany has a MUCH better chance bcoming the next Snooki or Trishelle than Luann becoming Meryl Streep. That’s reality.
Forget school. Go the rapper/reality TV route and learn to act by doing. Will Smith, Ice-T and LaLa Anthony are doing just fine.
Cofyjunky over 12 years ago
Oh for pity’s sake, Luann! Why are you arguing with a fool?? Have you never heard the old Murphy’s Law: Don’t argue with a fool in public, because people won’t know the difference.
YatInExile over 12 years ago
Holy crap, Tiff just made a good point. There are plenty of stars who can’t act.

This week’s strip along with some other recent ones make me think that Greg is preparing to move the Luann universe up a year – only in Pittsville does one year have so many summers and Christmases! Could we be seeing Luann and crew heading to college in another 3-5 years? This plotline seems to be laying that ground work. Although I would be really suspicious if all the characters go to the same community college – Delta and Bernice in a Community College doesn’t sound plausible – but it looks like Luann won’t escape the Tiff anytime soon..

Have we ever met Tiffany’s parents? doesn’t she get any guidance at all?

Let’s flash forward 10…no 15 years. Guess who’s married with 3 kids! Think not? Think again: I graduated with just a person. Was she ever a success? Only in her mind…….

Y’know, if Tiff was real, she’d be in heaven right now. I mean THINK about it. For probably three weeks whe’s been in every single strip. It’s been all about her.
Isn’t it time to finally put this entire arc to rest and start focusing on some of the other characters instead of this blonde parking lot rain puddle?

Canada is where “Hollywood” shoots a good many shows, near Vancouver BC. Think X-Files, Psych, Stargate, lots of others. It’s the tax policies that lure production companies, which is quite a topic of discussion in the Los Angeles area.

Tiffany could follow Kim K’s example and make a pron video. Heck! Worked for Kim and her entire family.

Tiffany has herself a plan. The rest is just details.
mrsullenbeauty over 12 years ago
If Tiffany plans to be a star or anything else in the entertainment arena, she needs to get a move on. Her shelf-life as a “desirable commodity” is fast approaching its expiration date; the number of roles for women drop precipitously once they’re past their mid-20s. Her best bet is to drop out of high school NOW and start hitting audition calls.

I’m going to wait for Greg to get his focus back.
kenhense over 12 years ago
Greg got more out of the Tiffany/Acting thing than I would have expected. And a lot of truths have showed up on this blog. Funny thing I used to know somebody like Crystal. Very hot AND intelligent. However she was in a video once – nada. The fine line between fake & real is at the heart of the arts.

it’s pretty much a given that IF Tiffany hits the high of stardom the fall will be spectacular. tons of tabloid photos and punchlines from late night talk show hosts.

Whatever happened to mixing things up instead of staying with one arc at a time? The Tiff thing is really getting stale. Even when she was Shearaton St Louis, there was no redemption so she stays an idiot. About ready to give up on this strip.
