I do wonder if this is supposed to be the point of these parallel storylines. Gunther has often seemed unsuitable to be paired with any rational human, but his peculiarities may be better handled by Bernice than Rosa.^^Gunther belongs with Luann… when he and Bernice were a couple (for a short amount of time), Luann got jealous and stole him from her! (Only to dump him shortly afterwards)

I wonder if they have any with brighter colors? ^Interestingly, the apparel comes from Hawaii, and is an altered version of a more formal dress… but the “stereotype” MuuMuu is the one that looks like two can fit in it at the same time..

I think Bernice should just wear a lovely one-piece suit with a one-shoulder strap, draped bust mid drift effect and regular leg openings ( not ultra high leg cut) a la P. Anderson. She could choose a burnt orange color with touches of gold which wouldn’t be too brazen…or turquoise… If she did her hair in an updo with some tendrils floating down one side (the same side as the one shoulder strap) she’d look ultra feminine and then………really throw Gunther into a panic. Even Tiff would be thrown off her game…

I don’t know why the strike-outs in my posting…unless I held a key down too long. Hopefully, I wasn’t censored for the description of the suit…..or the poor sentence structure…lol

Delta and Bernice provide comic patter on the Great Pool Party Swimsuit Buying Expedition; perhaps they will run into Gunther and Knute and exchange some ideas. Bernice’s cynicism and self-critcism and Gunther’s phobias abut nudity and girls could be an interesting mix, leaving Delta and (of all people!) Knute to keep them sane….

They gave Luann a makeover. Isn’t it time for Bernice to have one, too?

Knute’s more likely to wear a muumuu than Gunther is.

Bernice used to be interesting and fun—now she’s painful to watch a lot of the time. Whose idea was it to turn her into a bitchy drag? Go back in time, dear cartoonist! Wave your magic pen/wand and change Bernice back into the person she used to be.

Not that anyone really cares about what I think but in case anyone is doing a survey: I really hate the new story arc on Pibgorn. If I wanted to read Shakespeare I’d read a play.

All the girls on this strip are quite fetching. They have great bodies, and are pretty. Just a bit of difference in their self-images. As does Gunther on the male side. I think this is a small part of maturation as they go on to the senior year

He’s a wonderful artist. I’ve begun to draw and paint since I’ve been retired and I try to copy his style: long legs, lots of curves on his female characters, careful shading to define muscles, etc. I loved the “Djinn of It” but not so much this new arc. Picked Luann to ask about it because this strip draws so many commenters.

Bernice won’t do anything about her hair. She’s too strong-willed and independent to change for the crowd. But a pool party – it will be interesting to see how she looks soaking wet.

Good luck finding any swimwear this time of year!

Back at the beginning of the strip, Bernice was the best. There were times she practically carried the strip. The time she almost died and Luann saved her is possibly the best strip in the series, with the possible exception of her involvement with Dirk and drugs. Her feud with Ann was far more realistic and fun than the one between TJ and Ann. What about the time she and Zane were trapped in the burning building, and because of it, Brad left his spot as Potatohead and turned into firefighter? I have always secretly believed that the stories around Bernice were so great that Mr. Evans had to water them down so she would not surpass Luann.

Those were terrific arcs starring Bernice, for sure. I also loved the makeover Tiff gave her (though I know others didn’t), out of which we got her curly-girl incarnation. I never thought of it before, but I bet you’re right with your last statement, Lev. Bernice was always more interesting than Luann back in the day.

There are two Luann strips that made me cry. One was Brad’s graduation on 5/28/99. The other was this Bernice strip: 8/2/02.

So I take it from this strip, Luann grows up and changes her name to Cathy.

Lose the headband and the three hairs that stick out. Give Bernice some bangs that sweep to the side. Keep the curly hair. Tiffany gave her that hair back when perms were stylish, but it looks better than it did when straight.

Sounds like a one piece for Bernice.

OR Rosa is not on the list of people Luann feels competitive with.

The last time I recall seeing Bernice in poolside wear, it was a big floppy hat, long sleeves and long pants.

Yes, that’s a good question…aren’t they supposed to be in a town called Pitts which is supposedly in southern California? Everyone ought to have at least one, if not more, swimsuits since most population areas are not far from the Coast\Beach… ;)

I don’t understand this about Luann and Gunther…granted there are stories about the two, but I never got the idea that Luann was so…so nasty to do this to Gunther… ;)

Perhaps I don’t remember that because I tend to block out depressing scenes in comics, especially in one I like so much. I always thought Tiff was the one with a mean streak…? ;)

While swimming in high school phys ed we went alnatural. Yes, nude and the girls wore loose fitting jumpers. You could actually see the girls swim class if you were held out of gym class and you could see into the pool area from the locker room headquarters area. The girls could look down into the swim area by putting a stool near a window and looking down where the boys would wave to them.

@Realist, SO TRUE! Even back here in ‘76 when I was late 30s I had a skirt in hand ready to put on – someone shot the photo first (but it was all his family and mine at his pool). Now I pasted it together with his because the actual one in the shot I was bent over drying my hair, but it looks good to me now that I’m older and a little wrinkled (at least still not fat).
