    Online definition of ‘engineering’:

the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures.

A dress doesn’t seem to fit those categories, but what do I know…

I know there are a lot of readers who are really happy about this development.

I guess I’ll check back in January

I think the biggest thing is how Luann was able to get Gunther to define engineering as a way to create the design she made. She understood what engineering is, how it relates to design, and she got Gunther to see it. Kind of diminishes all those who minimize her intelligence or learning development I think. Engineering and design work together in so many objects. How about one’s cell phone, or car, or furniture, or buildings, so why not clothes?

I can not imagine an engineering course, taught to ABET standards, where the student is allowed to choose a course project without first presenting said proposed project to the instructor for review and approval to proceed.

    .

The problem here is that Greg Evans, with his limited experience of things outside of the art and artist world, has the misconception that ALL university courses are taught in the same manner as art classes – i.e., project and subject given to student, student turns in result after specified time w/o periodic review and evaluation, as would be the case with an engineering project.

How do you make an ‘improved’ bridesmaid dress? They’re looking for everyday objects, a bridesmaid dress is a special occasion item. It wouldn’t qualify.

And how is it that Luann doesn’t have any other classes? When I was in college I had three or four classes a semester to deal with but all she ever works on is her art class.

Actually, there are engineers who design clothing. For example, the Speedo swimsuits the Olympic swimmers wear are designed to reduce passive drag, active body drag, and the amount of oxygen a swimmer needs at a given speed. I don’t know much about weddding gowns, but it seems to me that engineering principles could be used on a wedding dress to minimize weight, calculate the best design for train to reduce drag, minimize or maximize thermal management, depending on the weather conditions (if it’s an outside wedding)…

Aw, Don’t SWEAT It, Gunth. “Dress Designing” is No Big Deal.

    Here let Me HELP:

Take One Lu’s Existing Designs and Just ‘Embellish’ it.

    1) Make Sure the Dress is Long and Form Fitting, Empathizing Luann’s Succulent Curves.2) The Neckline Should PLUNGE, Daringly to Her Navel, But at the SAME time, Accenting, Her Rather Ample Bosom.3) The Back Should Also Plunge, down to very near Her Perfectly formed Rear.4) There Should be a Very Revealing Split in the side, to Show off Luann’s Curvy Legs and Thighs, that goes right up to Her Hip.5) For Shoes, Ordinarily I Suggest ‘Peep-Toe Stilettos’ but Why not Surprise Everyone and have Her come out Barefoot in Honor of the Wedding? Make Sure Her Nails are Painted A Deep Rich Green.6) Speaking of Wedding, Since its taking place in December, I recommend that You make it a Long Sleeve Dress. After all, We Don’t want Our Gal to Catch Cold, do We?7) I’d then Top Everything Off with a Gold Headband.

And THERE You Have It. Luann will be the Talk of Pitts!

And THEN Gunth, You can Discuss How Much SHE Owes YOU…..,

Sewing is a craft that actually requires practice to do well. And engineers often draw designs, and someone ELSE does the actual assembling.

And a dress isn’t an engine.

4I think Gunther is taking a very risky and rather “loose” manner of defining the dress as appropriate for his own Moony U project. Before he commits to the dress also becoming HIS project as well as Luann’s….. I think he had better get this sort of project pre-approved by his Moony U professor. Like was stated by some above, I feel it would be best if Gunther:1. Helps out Luann and becomes the person who sews together Luann’s design (and in this scenerio, I also recommend that Luann seek out pre-approval from Zebo to make sure it is ok that she uses this sort of help and support for her project).2. Gunther should do his own, individual, design project for his engineering class that is based upon what is more in keeping with the goals for that project. IF Luann can be of some support or help in this endeavor, that would be a nice return of the favor he would be doing for her, but it is not a requirement. 3. While collaboration is often a very important and useful aspect of different projects in college courses…. it is a little bit worrisome for me that if Gunther helps out Luann on her project and Luann does not get prior approval from Zebo…. Zebo may dock her grade significantly because the actual “hands-on” artistry of her effort was actually done by Gunther. So, I think Luann really needs to think this through carefully and talk to Zebo FIRST before committing. Zebo may be fine with the collaboration, or he may not be. It is too nebulous right now for Luann to safely jump head first into this plan, IMO. Gunther’s engineering professor may also be fine with a dress as Gunther’s project or he/she may not be. It is FAR TOO nebulous right now for Gunther to adopt a dress as his project.

If Gunther could design a better Can Opener for his project he could easily design a better Sewing Machine.

Then use Luann’s dress design as a demonstration of how effective his new sewing machine is.

Plus since Gunther already likes sewing he should know what the flaws in a traditional sewing machine are so it’ll be easy for him to know what needs improving.

We’re gonna have to deal with wedding-related arcs for months. With 9/11 cited as a catalyst for Toni & Brad coming together, I cannot see it as being the occasion for the wedding itself. Methinks we are looking at Memorial Day weekend, in 2017. It will be interesting to see if Lu & Gunth become a couple by then, or as a byproduct of the wedding itself. Could Greg pull a Lynn Johnston maneuver and bring the strip to an end with the wedding?

Luann also has many times helped Gunther, especially with social issues. SHE might therefore wind up becoming the person who clues Gunther in to Tiff showing interest in him if they spend some time talking. The intersection of fashion, engineering, and health is also an interesting issue, whether discussing circulatory impairment, muscle cramping or both from too tight neckware, bra straps, girdles, etc., or the repositioning of the body, all the way through the lumbar vertebrae to compensate for wearing heels, the extra burden placed on the forefoot by heels and the pathologies that can create, etc. In real life someone with Gunther’s interests might find that an intriguing field of inquiry. There are multiple ways that reengineering clothing can become better for health, but if it does not satisfy appear needs (a powerful social issue) then health often is given a backseat without even consideration.

If that was not clear enough: despite vernacular uses treating science and engineering as the same thing, they are not in practise. Does each use aspects of the other, and rely on those? Of course. Not being the same thing does not diminish either. Each has its own important value.
