The Irish also fought alongside the Mexicans in the Mexican War of 1846; didn’t want the Americans to pulverize their fellow Catholics. It was known as El Batallón de San Patricio.

The DeGroots are surely of Dutch ancestry. Why are they so dedicated to observing St. Patrick’s Day?

@SEISMIC: I happen to be Jewish, but for St. Patrick’s day, often join my pals for a visit to a pub as an ‘honorary Irishman’ for the day. A lot of folks enjoy the parts of the holiday that have little to do with religion or ethnic heritage, as Luann’s internet search shows…

Corned beef isn’t Irish, they picked it up in New York from Jewish immigrants. And there weren’t any snakes in Ireland for St. Patrick to drive out.

I read the history of it, too, and it’s St Paddy, NOT St Patty

Men are so smart, and girls are so stupid. Why would they choose to wear makeup instead of learning things? Don’t they know you have to pick one?!

what about green for the color of vomit behind the dumpster (also green) after drinking too many green beers chased with a shamrock shake or three to sober up? ERIN GO BRAAAAAAAAGH

And the people using it as sn excuse to drink.

Educational strip for me today. Never realized Patrick was not canonized. So, his spirit could be called the “Saint” of the people.

What a hodgepodge of mis- & dis-information, today. Meh.

I never got that “When Irish eyes are smiling sure as in the moth of May” verse since St. Paddy’s Day is in March. Maybe because it’s easier to come up with a rhyme for May. Who knows.

I’m not Irish or Catholic, but I get annoyed when people make fun" of saints. Patrick and Nicholas were holy men, not drunken revelers.

I’ve learned last year that originally the official color of St. Patrick’s Day isn’t green, it’s blue.

If St. Patrick was never canonized by the Pope, how is he a Saint?

I once went to a Bon Jovi concert on St. Patrick’s Day. Most of the audience was drunk and when they turned down the lights, you could see all the flashing green necklaces and bracelets people were wearing. Two very drunk women several rows away from us decided to hold a loud conversation throughout most of the show so we heard more of them than the band.

Just about everything you may think you know about St. Patrick is probably wrong.

St Paddy’s Day is on a Friday this year. There’s gonna be a LOT of drunks all weekend.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
That has no effect on the Irish celebrations here.

On St. Patrick’s Day the Chicago River is dyed green.

Folks are reading WAY too much into this one. It is around our calendar time for St. Patrick’s Day – PERIOD. Frank looks at it from a historic perspective, and Luann looks at it from a party-time perspective. That’s ALL!

And the Irish in Ireland spend the day in church and sober.

“Saint” Patrick and “Saint” Christopher are not meant to be theology, just harmless fables meant to add color to nice stories.

Two generations of non-Irish cartoon characters feeling smaltzy about St. Patrick’s Day. (Celebrated officially in Chicago yesterday, “the Saturday before the actual date,” and with a dispensation from Lenten abstinence from meat for Chicago Catholics this coming Friday, March 17th, the actual feast day)….

I just want to know one thing. Who in Hell put St Patrick’s day right in the middle of Lent???
dosbears Premium Member about 8 years ago
The symbolic shamrock has three leaves, signifying the Catholic trinity. It’s not a four-leaf clover.
Awfulhorrid about 8 years ago
He “converted” Pagans in the sense that if they didn’t accept Christianity, entire villages were put to the sword. (That’s the part about “driving the snakes out of Ireland,” in case it wasn’t clear.) This may be just another excuse to drink for most people, but for a lot of us, this is not a day of celebration. I wear neither green nor orange on “Saint” Patrick’s day, but I do wear black.

On St. Patrick’s Day everybody is Irish.
Except the Scots. We’re still Scots.
