I’m enjoying this solely based on the conniption fit that some of the more uptight readers are gonna have. “How DARE a married couple sleep in the nude! Bad enough they’re in the same bed!” After all, didn’t some papers run an old strip rather than show the conclusion to the “strip-household-chores” arc?
Very nice, 8 panels, Brad and Toni are obviously spending the day or evening engaging in marital discussions, ahem, relations, and the double-entendre in the last panel is priceless. I can’t help saying this, Toni has the situation well in hand, and as usual wins the argument in the end.
Interesting – Toni is the aggressor in this relationship. Many doubt that Brad had gone there before they were married. But back in the day, Toni was with Dirk – who didn’t wait for anything…
@UKURAINE and SOMEGUY#: Of course, you both have the right to your opinions. I have that same right and am now using it to suggest that if this mildly suggestive ’toon is so offensive to you, there are many others that you can read instead and be spared from being offended…
Man, how many OTHER strips could get away with this kind of thing? Greg’s always been a BIT on the “naughty” side of things, talking about sex, nudity and titillation in a more G-rated sense. But this is even naughtier than BEFORE! Of course, he can pass it off as all “in your head” since you can’t really SEE anything, but we all know what the intent is.
Greg, you beautiful, perverted bastard. Long may you reign, and continue to corrupt the newspaper funnies.
I love this couple. They are so in love with each other!Even if they have an argument, they immediately remember that it is better to make love, not war.
Apparently Toni decided that the discussion about calling the plumber, and, who’s job it was to call him was over, And, decided to resume the “discussion” they were having BEFORE the subject of the plumber came up, and, gave Brad a non-verbal clue to that effect.
WHY are these two even “talking,”for Pete’s Sake??
Today’s Strip SHOULD be a 9 Chickweed Lanest, seven blacked out panels each punctuated with a tasteful “Hmmmm, Ahhhhhh!!!!” With Panel eight featuring an Angry Brad turning on the lights and wondering the Hell that “Cat” is doing in their bed?
I love how the author has to preface in the first panel that ’They’re married!’ in these kind off comics so as not to offend the uptight elderly people that still read them.
Not sure what the surprise is about. This degree of mild suggestiveness has been tolerated for years. Also, I like this female bonobo approach to easing tension with sex play. Less common in our species, methinks.
Brad is one lucky guy. His wife seems to have the lions share of both the brains and the beauty in this relationship. He really isn’t the sharpest tool and seems pretty ready to argue over some very unimportant matters. Brad, lighten up. Being right isn’t important, being alright is.
I was counting on puddles to trustily come up on Sunday. Had I known it was Brad coming up, I would’ve comented earlier. Toni wins and Brad is all up for it.
Kids today only read the screens on their smart phones which no doubt, gives them access to far worse than seeing a married couple in their own bed with no clothing on! Where have YOU been???
This might be ‘replaced’ with an old Sunday strip in certain sections – I think Greg has noted that before. This may be a subtle(?) rebuttal from him about that.
Hey – Monday Greg & Karen should jump to Tiffany’s Dad and Ann Eiffel on his yacht. Ann is likely working very hard to keep Mr. Farrell on her side. Give your kids some candy and tell them to go away…
Every single time that there is a strip which can be interpreted one way by adults and another way by kids, it can be guaranteed that a few people will assume that the kids will interpret it the same way as an adult. Opps! Wrong!
1. Any kid who does interpret it the same way as an adult will be one who has been given enough info to also realize that Toni is showing affection and ending a fight — a positive thing in a marriage.
2. All the rest will figure that she pinched him.
Seriously, think back to when you were young. You likely would have assumed that a pinch happened. I can recall strips from the 1950s (and some from two or three decades earlier when I got my hands on them which were often far more risqué than the current ones), and laughing with assumptions of things like pinches, only to laughingly show the strip to my father and have him give me a bemused “kids!” look, and I would unsuccessfully ask, “What? What?”
No objection to the adult content, but are they really no longer newlyweds? I know they married in December 2016, and a couple are no longer newlyweds after their first anniversary. However, time doesn’t seem to pass at the same rate in their universe as in ours. How many decades has it taken for Luann and Brad to get through junior high and high school and turn into adults?
I have to admit that my first response on reading today’s strip was along the lines of “Whoa – I pity the parents who have to explain the joke in today’s strip to their young kids!” But then I realized that 1) this strip probably hasn’t attracted younger readers since Luann got out of grade school/middle school, 2) the strip largely left the joke-a-day format that young kids like behind at about the same time. I’m sure the many commenters who’ve pointed out that today’s kids no longer read the funnies – on paper or otherwise – are also spot-on. More’s the pity, I think. The “funny pages” have been a mainstay for me since I first learned to read. As a kid they were something to share with my brother and even my parents; as a young adult they were a nice distraction from the pressures of college or my career. Now I especially enjoy the comics with well-written, on-going story lines and characters that, for whatever reason, I sort of come to care about. But, getting back to my first point, I don’t think I’ve ever followed every. single. comic strip. printed in my local newspaper – just the ones that interested me at any given point in my life. Hence today I have no idea what’s going on in Garfield, or Dick Tracy, Family Circus, or the 9CWL that so many commenters like to cite – and I doubt that there are many Luann readers who were left puzzled as to what’s going on in the last panel.
Peeps, lighten up. Kids don’t read the paper nowadays. And if a newspaper editor felt this was too racy, they’d replace it for the day with something else, or move it to another section. Relax.
Love this, Greg & company! So poignant, well penned, sweet, authentic, a little risky & risqué, & heartfelt. I’m not even going to read the others’ comments, some of which are probably “Oh my goodness!” and/or “How could you ! ?” This couple is a family, and pillow talk is part of life. If your older / more conservative fans got their feathers ruffled, they can go enjoy sanitized Hi & Lois, Fam Circus, etc…. Anyway, peace. Bravo & Kudos to you, & so cool to see you guys evolving! Tally Ho!
And as we ride off into the sunset remember 2 things: 1. Stop trying to insult seniors, we like this sexy stuff…bring back Tiffany. 2. And Toni, you add a special meaning to the phrase, Cold hands – warm heart."
But, the “punchline” of Brad and Toni working on or discussing something and having the end result be that they get aroused and have sex…. is seeming to become their only punchline (other than the alternative where they are working on or discussing something, they get aroused and get ready to have sex, but are interrupted.).
If this is going to be their perpetual story arc every time we see them…. it is IMO going to get rather tedious, and awfully dull, awfully fast.
What about the other aspects of their young married lives? What about their plans? What about their jobs? What about their interaction with others? IMO, their story arcs were more dynamic when they involved dating, when they involved becoming firefighters, when they were dealing with Dirk, hell even when Shannon is dropped off unexpectedly.
A punchline where Toni and Brad prepare to have sex? I would hope their characters, like most couples, would be having sex and intimacy as regularly as both partners want it. But… as the punchline most times we see them? Sort of redundant IMO.
