If you think you lost it and can’t find it, don’t worry – it will find you.

Had a Whammo boomerang (many, many) years ago. Got home to the farm with it after buying it and it was after dark. Large yard light in front of the barn illuminating a fairly large area and I couldn’t wait to try it so I threw it. It was pretty heavy. I had no idea what I was doing. It climbed up and above the lighted area. Couldn’t see it. Really unnerving. I knew it was up there somewhere and probably coming for me. Relaxed somewhat when I heard it hit the tin roof of the barn. Turns out it didn’t just go out a ways and come right back like in the cartoons. Found it next morning.

Reminiscent of Fritz Lieber’s “Gonna Roll the Bones”: “Then he turned and headed straight for home, but he took the long way … around the world.” Also Ben Bova’s “Men of Good Will,” in which an early conflict between US and Russian moon-bases leaves a cloud of bullets in low orbit.

A friend got a new boomerang and we tried it out. He read the instructions and tried throwing it. It disappeared into some trees and didn’t come back. We couldn’t find. Both of us spent weeks looking over our shoulders in case that boomerang came out of nowhere to strike.

I’m reminded of an old Gaston LaGaffe gag where Gaston loads a boomerang into a crossbow. From bande dessinee to bandages.

I had one of those as a kid. Not the electro kind, just the regular kind.
