Kate is more subtle than Danae but every once in a while she reminds us that the two are sisters.

I associate vestibules with old grocery stores where you had to go through 2 doors to get in. The tiny room between the 2 doors was called a vestibule. The weather also had to go through 2 doors to get in.

Wait till Danae tries to give that to some teacher as the meaning of vestibule! It isn’t, really. A hallway is a passage connecting two or more rooms within a building; a vestibule, as sirbadger says, connects a room within a building to the outside and has a door at each end. In a residence, there would also usually be a closet for the coats or other “vestments” one might need to put on when going outside and put away when returning. That’s where the word comes from.

Whilst I love the character, her wit and worldliness, I’m beginning to think Kate doesn’t seem to do any exercise and her only past time is reading. She needs to get outside and smell the fresh air.

When she finds her ipad, Danae can look up vestibule and see that it’s really the hallway or room at the entrance of a building, not between two rooms. Then she can score one on Kate.

Little bit of trivia I heard t’other day: V is the only letter in the English alphabet that is NEVER silent. (My five favorite “fancy” words right now are: egregious, specious, disingenuous, spurious, and exigency.) I like vestibule, too. . .

Arthur C. Clarke wrote a story about “earworms” back in 1957. It was called “The Ultimate Melody.”

As you can imagine, it relates to a melody you just cannot get out of your mind…

It was published in “Tales from the White Hart,” a really nice collection of stories.

One of the stories is “The Defenestration of Ermintrude Inch.”

That was where I first learned the word defenestration.

Oh, and one of Clarke’s examples of melodies that get stuck in your mind was “The Third Man Theme.”

Wither thou goest, the zither followeth..

    Even the Beatles!

However, for the most entertaining version of the Third Man Themesee the Andre Rieu version:

Vestibule is the Christian appropriation of the first part of the Hebrew tri-partite Temple area (gathering-preparation place, worshiper area, curtained-off priestly Holy of Holies).Nowadays it is the space between the entrance door into the church and the entrance door into the worship area proper. Catholics use it to shake off wet umbrellas and greet friends who happened to arrive at the same time. That area is employed by Christian Orthodox to purchase votive candles and spiritually prepare to enter into the dedicated worship space. In either case, ideally, it is serves as a special “liminal” space between leaving the secular ideals/values/ world and entering-ascending into a transcendent level. Sorry, I don’t know what that area is for Protestant Christians.
