There are no periods in SOS, it is not an abbreviation. It does not mean “save our ship” or “save our souls” or any such thing; it does not stand for anything. It was merely adopted because it was easily recognized in Morse code (three dots, three dashes, three dots); the previous distress call was CQD and was much more difficult to recognize and wasn’t an abbreviation either. SOS was adopted back when the only means of radio communications was with Morse code. It was an international distress call; if it was an abbreviation, it would be different letters for different languages.
