The vertical and horizontal components of two-dimensional motion are independent of each other because any motion in one direction does not affect motion in the other direction. (WWW so it must be true)
This strip ran in 1977. I’m trying to remember when skateboarding became a thing. It was around in the sixties when I was a kid. It was often called “sidewalk surfing” and mirrored the surfing craze back then. But they basically only had steel roller skate wheels so you were pretty limited in speed, maneuvering, etc. Urethane wheels with ball bearings came along in the 70s and it really took off as a sport.

Fun Fact – The first ever patented skateboard was created in 1925: it was called the Kne-Koster.

How did he do that? Relative to the skateboard, wouldn’t that have been pure vertical jump from a standing start?
