Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for December 25, 2012
Transcript:
Nurse: Andy... Do you want any of your dad's things? His 'TV Guide' has some writing on it. Andy: Yeah. He liked to do the crossword. Nurse: Makes sense. He had it in his hands when he died. Must have been finished a puzzle. You sure you don't want it. Andy: Fine. I'll take it.

Pastis is more likely to leave you with an aching belly from laughter than a lump in the throat but this time he gave me the latter.
Kamino Neko about 12 years ago
Aw….how bittersweet.
ceceoh about 12 years ago
Well, Andy, your Dad gave you a gift as well. He got you off that stinking chain.

Sometimes Mr. Pastis’ comics reflect real life events, like when he wrote one after his father-in-law died. I hope this comic does not reference the passing of his own father. [Also, for another tearjerker, you should look up the comic with the Crock dad and his son at the swing set]
Yontrop about 12 years ago
We don’t need to bring religion into this.
flagfly about 12 years ago
This made me cry too…on the way to Conn. our son’s mother-in-law died an hour before they got there.
Sisyphos about 12 years ago
Andy has the best possible Christmas present under the circumstances. —A token of his dad’s love. This arc has been very powerful. Excellent work, Stephan!

Thank you Stephan – I agree totally with everyone here – she said tearfully.I was estranged from my Dad growing up and in later years we had an awkward relationship. The last time I saw him alive was when he was being put in an ambulance. He couldn’t speak but did the sign language for I Love You. My last memory – but very powerful to me.Merry Christmas to All!
Nelly55 about 12 years ago
Thanks for this story arc……………….a well needed reminder to say “I love you” more often
bravo Stephan

I’m alone at my sister’s house in southern Virginia, far from home. She passed away a few weeks ago. But this strip is much more about my Dad for me. Thanks, Stephan (My tears rolled yesterday.)… and thanks, mabrndt, for giving me 3 cards to open; I don’t know what’s in the mail at home but it more than doubled what I got here.Merry Christmas!

It takes an awful lot to choke me up but this came close. I will admit though that a movie I saw last night ( Marley and Me ) made me cry like a little kid. Big tough trucker, eh? Merry Christmas people.

The greatest gift my grandfather ever gave me was on his birthday. He had been very ill for almost a month. Didnt even expect to talk to him. But we did talk for around 10 seconds. In which we both said “I love you” to each other. Then he died the next day
K M about 12 years ago
Because my wife used to ride ambulances, we listen to an emergency monitor (a/k/a scanner). Before 9:00 a.m. today there were at least two sudden deaths in this area, and at least one was a suicide. Hate to say it; but these things happen even around the holidays. At least Andy gets — and appreciates — a memory that there was even a tenuous connection with his father.

Anyone else think this story was based on Stephen’s experience with a family member?
SpacemanSpiffCCE about 2 years ago
Now, I have read some really heartwarming strips in my time, such as Jason in foxtrot giving money to the hospital, Jon and Liz in Garfield finally hooking up, but this one completely takes the cake. At the start, it looked like just another humorous strip, but it slowly transitioned to this masterpiece. If you don’t love this story arc, then you are not human. Stephan Pastis has become my favorite comic strip writer. Sidenote: His pun strips are good
