One leaves a tip for good service… Where’s the service for self-service? Seriously, I don’t understand…

Just buy yourself a drink.

I was at a MLB park last weekend and I had to grab my own food out of the warmer, place it on the scanner, tap my card and the machine asked if I wanted to leave a tip. A tip for who? Myself? I’m the only one who did anything, the staff just stood there and made sure I didn’t walk off without paying.

They want you to tip for everything now if I’m at a sit down restaurant I’m good with 20-25% but if I’m going in and taking my pizza from the restaurant I don’t feel that amount is appropriate but I still tip 2 bucks on ever pie I get which going by the price is about 10%.

Yeah, here’s a tip… Blow it out your a**!

What’s worse is that often the workers don’t ever see these tips. Corps/Managers use them for other things. I always tip in cash to the servers hand.

It started going out of control when tip jars started showing up everywhere. Now it’s on the credit card scanners.

When was the last time an employee of an ordinary station in the USA worked the pump for you? Is it required by law somewhere?

The requests for tips, like the request for “rate our service” have gone way too far.

No. You don’t get a tip if I have to pump my own gas.

If I use ‘self-service’ I should get the employee discount.

Button for amount, button for percentage. But note the conspicuous absence of a “No Tip” button. Just like the places that try to cover up that option with tapes or stickers. My motto is: If I’m standing, I’m not tipping. And if your restaurant makes me pay on an iPad while the server gets to watch over my shoulder, I’ll call it out on my Yelp review and most likely never come back.

Problem is, tipping for service is not universal. It depends on the local culture. High touch, personal service in a sit-down restaurant should be tipped for, but going up to a counter for pickup food, please, give me a break. I can tell from personal experience my own, and others (I’ve worked in the gig industry, “Uber”) in the DFW area at a sit-down restaurant or any high service environment it can be hit and miss. Dallas in particular can be strange, in corporate here (where I spent most of my life) almost 1/2 the people working are from other parts of the United States or outside the US. So maybe they bring it with them ? Who knows ?
